(Framelines Added) 1d dull rose SG 9b strip of 5 from the left-hand
side of the sheet with large margin at left, other margins close to
touching, the right-hand unit cut-into at base, three largely very
fine strikes pf Barred Oval '5' cancel of Sandhurst (Bendigo) and
partial London arrival datestamp in red across the two left-hand
units, a few small closed tears and other minor faults hardly
detract from the fine facial appearance, Cat £1000+ for singles.
John Barwis states at page 67 that "The largest known multiples are
four used strips of 6". His strip of 3 in brownish-red sold in 2012
for £2070. A very scarce multiple

left, some thins - including a concealed central hole on the
lower-left unit - that don't detract from the very fine facial
appearance, Cat £240+. A rare multiple

1856-58 Perkins Bacon Queen-on-Throne die proof of the Edward Henry
Corbould design that was adapted for the 1d & 6d stamps in black on
thin wove paper (69x85) showing the outer dimensions of the die,
hinged to slightly larger backing paper. Exquisite. Ex 'Besancon'
(II), where illustrated with reduced margins: sold after the 2018
auction for SFr1210. For the stamps, the oakleaves & laurel were
deleted, 'VICTORIA' was moved from the base of the throne to a
curved cartouche at the top. The ideal introductory item for a
study of these stamps, that are important for being two of only
three Victorian stamps, the other being the De La Rue 2d, that were
not wholly produced in Victoria

good to large, superb part-strike of the Perkins Bacon 'CANCELLED'
handstamp, Cat £12,000. Superb. Ex JRW Purves, Rodney Perry and
'Besancon' (I): sold for €12,700. This is Position 3 from the
original block of 6 (3x2): see 'CANCELLED by Perkins Bacon' by
Peter Jaffé at page 72. See also 'Stamps of Victoria' by Geoff
Kellow at page 103 & at Plate 6 where the stamp is illustrated. Six
similarly defaced stamps from many Colonies were gifted by Perkins
Bacon to Rowland Hill's nephew Ormond Hill, an egregious error of
judgment that saw Perkins Bacon lose their stamp-printing
contracts. Peter Jaffé illustrated Positions 3 (this stamp), 4 (in
the Royal Collection) and 5 (in the institutionalised Amy Vickery
collection in Sydney). Jaffé was apparently aware of the existence
of Pos 1. Pos 6 has not been recorded. Excepting Pos 1, of unknown
whereabouts, this is the only example known to be in private hands,
making it one of the most elusive and desirable of all the 75
Ormond Hill stamps

unused with large-part (brown) gum, Cat £3500. Ex Alfred Caspary
and Les Molnar: sold for $3145. RPSV Certificate (2012).
Underrated: approximately six unused examples are recorded, of
which this is one of the finest, and probably the only example with
the cracked electro. Geoff Kellow at page 135 states "This is a
rare stamp unused"

top, Melbourne duplex cancel of 'NO12/68', Cat £7000. The only
recorded example and widely considered to be one of the great
rarities of Victoria. Ex JM Fenton (1928), JRW Purves, Rodney Perry
and Geoff Kellow. Kellow at page 176 states "One vertical pair is
known imperforate between...perforation errors are most unusual
among Victorian stamps". Illustrated by him at Plate 11, where
noted as "unique"

plus a significant premium for the constant variety that we would
like to see listed by Gibbons appearing as it does once on every
sheet. Only 275 sheets were printed, and this is believed to be the
only recorded unused example of the Short 'I' variety. Ex Les
Molnar: sold for $1515 (Sale 174 Lot 343), and again at our auction
of 2.5.2014 for $3260. RPSV Certificate (2012)

1863-81 QV Laureates V/Crown Watermark Perf 12½ 4d dull rose red as
SG 150 but an unlisted shade, two overlapping strikes of
Castlemaine duplex of SE15/78, unpriced by Gibbons in the listed
shade unused or used. Geoff Kellow records Perf 12½ only on the
last two printings of the 4d (Sept 1880 & April-May 1881, both in
"rosine"), stating at page 165 that the earlier 'dull rose-red'
printings are found only Perf 13 or Perf 12. This stamp is from an
earlier printing and clearly dated prior to the recorded
introduction of two single-line Perf 12½ machines in 1879 and the
conversion of two Perf 13 comb machines to Perf 12x12½ in 1880.
(Gibbons list all these together as "Perf 12½"). RPSV Certificate
