postal card used from Buenos Aires to Charters Towers, Queensland
cancelled by a framed Buenos Aires datestamp (May 31) and prepaying
6 c. for a postcard to Queensland. The transportation of the postal
card was interrupted in London (July 1) where the “POSTCARDS TO

and the card returned to Argentina. Route - Royal Mail Steam Packet
Co: Departed Colon 7 June 1883 per “Nile” via Jamaica (9 June),
Jacmel (12 June) and St. Thomas (14 June) to Plymouth (28 June); by
rail to Southampton (1 July) and returned to Buenos Aires, arriving
1 Aug 1883 (62 days). Note: The reason for the refusal to forward
this postal card from England to Queensland is difficult to
determine. This card has imprinted at top “Universal Postal
Universal” for when Argentina joined the UPU in 1878. The card was
only available for delivery to UPU members and since The Australian
Colonies only joined the UPU in 1891, the postal card was thus
refused transmission in England and returned to Argentina

Crowned Circle Handstamps. New Zealand. 1844 (16 May) entire letter
from John Seal Bird in Wellington to his sister Lady Maxwell in
London, with red framed "paid at/wellington" on the front, oval
"wellington/ (crown)/ my 18/ 1844/ new zealand" on the reverse and
red London receiving datestamp (5.10), manuscript '4' showing four
pence paid but deleted as a double rate letter, also '1/4' to be
paid by the recipient. Endorsed "Tyne", mail was taken off the Tyne
in the Channel after she became stuck on Margate sands. John Bird
arrived as a New Zealand Company settler with a land allocation but
struggled. An advert from the New Zealand Gazette and Wellington
Spectator gives his address at Te Aro Flat and his occupation as
Cabinet-maker, Upholsterer and Paper Hanger. The long transcribed
letter thanks Lady Maxwell for a gift of £25, building a house, the
natives demanding a high price for their land without paying "utu",
buying a section, buying a brick making machine and a flour mill;
most interesting. S.G. CC8 (Estimate £150 - £200)

South ...更多 Overland via Marseilles 1860 (April 22): Cover from Sydney, New South Wales to Nordenhamm, Grand Duchy of Oldenburg endorsed “per Emeu in closed mail to France”, bearing 1860 New South Wales Diadem 6 d. grey-brown, perf. 12, pair, neatly cancelled by Sydney duplex and prepaying 1 s. and underpaid 8 d. for a ½ ounce ship letter of 1 s. 8 d. to the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg. “F. 59” Franco-German Convention handstamp (Van der Linden fig. 1199) in black (tying the lower stamp) and “17” (silbergroschen) manuscript in blue to be paid on receipt. Fine and rare: the only recorded cover from the Australian Colonies to the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg and the only recorded example of the “F.59” Convention handstamp on mail from New South Wales. Route - P&O Line: Departed Sydney per “Emeu” 22 April 1860 via Galle (17 May) to Suez (2 June); overland to Alexandria; “Panther” (4 June) to Marseilles; by rail from Marseilles (10 June) via Paris and Aachen to Oldenburg, arriving 12 June 1860 (49 days). Note: Illustrated in "Maritime Connections to and from New South Wales" by Paul Wijnants on page 76. Provenance: Collection 'Alvarado', Palmer

reddish-purple and two 8 d. yellow-orange (scarce on letter),
cancelled by the Sydney duplex and prepaying 1 s. 10 d. comprising
1 s. 4 d. for a ½ ounce ship letter to England plus 6 d. Late Fee
levied after the closure of the mails. A very fine and rare
franking. Route - P&O Line: Departed Sydney 22 Oct 1864 per
“Bombay” to Galle (15 Nov); “Simla” (17 Nov) to Suez (3 Dec);
overland to Alexandria; “Euxine” (5 Dec) via Malta (8 Dec) to
Marseilles; by rail from Marseilles to London, arriving 13 Dec 1864
(52 days). Note: New South Wales temporarily increased the rates
via Marseilles from the 1 July 1864 to the 14 November 1864
becoming 1 s. 4 d for a ½ ounce ship letter via Marseilles. After
this date, the old rate of 10 d. was again resumed. Letters would
have been charged at the higher rates for only four P&O
sailings from Sydney from the July to October monthly voyages.
During the four month period of the temporary rate increase, mail
sent via Southampton during this time was readily available. Thus
mail sent via Marseilles during this period is rare, with only a
few examples recorded. Provenance: Collection Davis, Forster,
Palmer
