Transatlantic mail between France and the USA and vice versa - The
American Civil War & Blockade Runners; 1863 (May 22): Small cover
from the Burckmyer correspondence to Paris, enclosure datelined at
Charleston, carried from Wilmington by blockade runner Banshee (I)
on June 4, 1863, "NASSAU PAID JU 8 63" circular datestamp in red
and prepaid by forwarder 1 shilling 4p (1p in blue crayon retained
by Nassau post office), "Too Late" notation in same blue crayon
indicating the June sailing for New York had already left,
therefore carried by Cunard branch line 'Corsica' to New York and
then on 'China' of the Cunard line on July 17, arriving in
Queenstown July 25, LONDON July 27 transit, and bold CALAIS entry
datestamp of July 27. Minor edge nicks, nevertheless a very fine
blockade-run cover. Note: The Banshee (I) made seven round trip
voyages between the Bahamas or Bermuda and Wilmington before she
was captured by the U.S.S. Grand Gulf on Nov. 21, 1863. Reference:

Civil War 1862: Blockade Run cover from the Confederacy mailed to
Capt. Sir George N. Broke Middleton, Ipswich, England with oval
framed "FORWARDED BY / HENRY ADDERLEY & Co. / NASSAU N.P. /
BAHAMAS" in blue and "NASSAU / PAID" code A circular datestamp in
red (Nov 22). Rated with red "10" (cents) in crayon and "2" in
blue. Reverse with Ipswich cds (Dec 17) and Needham Market arrival
cds of the same day. Cover with some damage but reverse stating in
manuscript "Mr. Harry Middleton about his Boy "Hal" - answered in
Duplicate" which would indicate that Harry Middleton was in the
Confederacy at the time. Note: Capt. Sir George N. Broke Middleton
was a man of considerable influence and wealth (at this date he was
a retired Rear Admiral and in 1864 was High Sheriff of Suffolk),
upon his death his estates were inherited by Lady de Saumarez
making her the second largest landowner in London after the Duke of
Westminster.
