Incoming Mail Overland via Naples 1888 (September 28): 12 c. postal
stationery envelope from Buenos Aires, Argentina to Melbourne,
Victoria, indistinctly cancelled by Buenos Aires despatch datestamp
and underpaid for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to Victoria. Endorsed
“Via Brindisi” with “T” handstamp in black. Carried by French
packet to Marseilles and by rail via Paris to Naples. On arrival in
Melbourne a “MORE TO PAY” handstamp in black was applied with 7 d.
to pay for the recipient. A rare and colourful cover: thus far the
only cover recorded from Argentina to the Australian Colonies.
Route - French steamer: Departed Buenos Aires, Argentina 28 Sept
1888 to Calais. By rail via Marseille (20 Oct) to Naples. Orient
Line: Departed Naples (22 Oct) per “Cuzco” via Suez Canal and
Albany (19 Nov) to Adelaide (23 Nov); by rail to Melbourne (23 Nov)
and St Kilda, arriving 24 Nov 1888 (over 63 days)

Incoming Mail Overland via Southampton 1883 (May): Argentina 6 c.
postal card used from Buenos Aires to Charters Towers, Queensland
cancelled by a framed Buenos Aires datestamp (May 31) and prepaying
6 c. for a postcard to Queensland. The transportation of the postal
card was interrupted in London (July 1) where the “POSTCARDS TO
THIS ADDRESS / CANNOT BE FORWARDED” handstamp in red was applied
and the card returned to Argentina. Route - Royal Mail Steam Packet
Co: Departed Colon 7 June 1883 per “Nile” via Jamaica (9 June),
Jacmel (12 June) and St. Thomas (14 June) to Plymouth (28 June); by
rail to Southampton (1 July) and returned to Buenos Aires, arriving
1 Aug 1883 (62 days). Note: The reason for the refusal to forward
this postal card from England to Queensland is difficult to
determine. This card has imprinted at top “Universal Postal
Universal” for when Argentina joined the UPU in 1878. The card was
only available for delivery to UPU members and since The Australian
Colonies only joined the UPU in 1891, the postal card was thus
refused transmission in England and returned to Argentina
