postage, struck in violet "FEE EARNED" and "FORWARDED / Delivery
Fee collected by / Office of first address", range of San Francisco
and RPO transit markings, received in New York and postmarked by
Foreign Mail Office (May 16), second address crossed-out and
handstamped "OFFERED AT ADDRESS / AT / CAUSE OF NON DELIVERY", with
manuscript endorsement indicating the connecting steamer had
sailed, Special Delivery informational label affixed overtop of
address, ultimate London c.d.s. arrival backstamp (May 26), some
small flaws given the cover's extended journey, exceptionally
striking and rare, being the only recorded mixed franking of the
1888 and 1902 Special Delivery issues

(71) 1861 30c orange Franklin used by bold grid cancel and tied by
red “Philadelphia, Pa. Paid May 5 (1863)" exchange cds on blue
cover to Wellington, India then mis-sent to Wellington, New
Zealand. Struck with clear red boxed “P.D.” handstamp at lower
right, with French transit markings and backstamps including
“Wellington, N.Z. JY 27 63” and “Madras SP 23 63.” Expertly
repaired along top edge, still fine overall.
The 30c franking prepaid the single-weight French mail rate to India, in effect from April 1857 to January 1868. Owing to the identical name of the intended destination, the cover was mistakenly routed through the French mails to Wellington, New Zealand, before being redirected via Madras to its proper addressee in India - an extraordinary round-the-world postal journey demonstrating both the reach and the fallibility of 19th-century global mail networks.

handstamp on 1864, 6¢ pink legal size entire with Wells Fargo
"Atlantic Express" printed frank, to Chrysopolis, Cal. with
"Overland" sender's endorsement, evidently carried through to
California and then missent to Copperopolis with Copperopolis and
Visalia Wells, Fargo & Co. oval transit handstamps, dated "August
18, 1866" on reverse and forwarded with "Via Aurora" pencil
endorsement appended on the front, sent back on the overland route
to Nevada, entered the mails with "Aurora, Nev., Sep 25" cds for
delivery to Chrysopolis; reduced sides and edge repairs, Fine and
an outstanding usage. Estimate; $1,000 - 1,500. A HIGHLY UNUSUAL
WELLS FARGO MISSENT AND FORWARDED USE. Wells Fargo's lines reached
Aurora in Nevada but not so Chrysopolis and a number of other
California mining camps and towns on the remote eastern side of the
Sierra Nevada Mountains. Aurora and Chrysopolis are both ghost
towns today. The site of Chrysopolis is now in Inyo County, which
was created out of Coso County the year this cover was sent. Coso
County was created two years before and included parts of Tulare
and Mono Counties but was never organized.With research on the
