1847 issue covers to France by Steven C. Walske, the noted
authority on U.S.-French mails, only two covers are recorded that
were carried by private ship to France. Regarding these covers,
Walske writes: "Non-contract ships also carried small amounts of
mail to France, and private ship rates applied to this type of mail
in both the United States and France. In the United States, the
1845 inland rates applied: 5 c. per half ounce if sent less than
300 miles, and 10 c. if sent over 300 miles. France assessed a one
décime (2 c.) ship fee plus variable inland rates until July 31,
1849. After that, collections in France were 3 décimes per 7.5
grams to the port of arrival or 6 décimes to other parts of
France." The other cover, illustrated in Walske's article, also
comes from the Octavius Yates correspondence. Reference: The 1847

Havre ...更多 Transatlantic mail between France and the USA and vice versa - Havre line between 1 July 1851 - 31 March 1857; 1856 (April 5): Entire letter from New York to Limoges, sent with the 'Fulton' of the Havre line, endorsed "Per Fulton", bearing 1856 Jefferson 5 c. red-brown (Scott 12) with good to large margins all round, just tied by red grid cancellation with matching "NEW-YORK Am. PKt. APR 5" exchange office cds, French "OUTRE-MER LE HAVRE" entry cds (April 19), both in red alongside. Reverse with French ambulants and LIMOGES transit (April 21) cds in black. This 'Fulton' voyage lasted from April 5-19, 1856 between New York and Le Havre. An appealing and interesting franking, correctly paid for the British packet but underpaid by 15 cents for the 20 cents direct American packet rate and nevertheless accepted; plus 6 décimes due for French inland postage. Reference: Displayed in "The United States five cent stamp of 1856 : the Frederick R. Mayer collection" on page 80. Provenance: Collection Weill Bros.; collection Fred Mayer, Matthew Bennett sale 294 (October 2005), lot 218; collection Jack Blanc, Corinphila sale 281 (November 2021), lot 7316.

Direct ...更多 Transatlantic mail between France and the USA and vice versa - Direct routing, 1 January 1870 - 30 June 1871; 1870 (Oct 19): Double port Entire letter from New York to Bordeaux, endorsed "pr. St. Laurent", bearing 1870/71 10 c. brown without grill (Scott 150), two single examples cancelled by segmented cork obliterator, part strike of "NEW YORK" despatch cds in red and clear octagonal Shipmail's datestamp in red of the following day alongside, charged with handstruck '24' décimes due. Reverse with BORDEAUX arrival cds (Nov 2). Non-contract steamship mail had to be paid with 10 cents per 1/2 oz. in the July 1864 rate while the corresponding French rate of January 1870 was 80 centimes per 10 grams. Thus this was a double rate entire in the States while it was a triple port entire in France. Sent with the 'St. Laurent' of the French Line, leaving New York on 20 October, arriving in Brest on 31 October 1870.
