SIGNIFICANT COVER ADDRESSED TO DR. ASHBEL SMITH DURING HIS 1842
DIPLOMATIC MISSION TO EUROPE ON BEHALF OF THE REPUBLIC OF TEXAS,
AND AN EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE BELGIAN "NAVIGATION
TRANSATLANTIQUE/PAR BATEAUX A VAPEUR" HANDSTAMP.In 1842 Dr. Ashbel
Smith traveled to Europe as the Republic of Texas charge d'affaires
(and plenipotentiary) to Great Britain and France. During this
trip, Dr. Smith secured ratification of treaties between Great
Britain and Texas. In France he worked to improve diplomatic
relations following the 1841 "Pig War," a dispute between
governments that erupted after a French diplomat ordered the
slaughter of a local settler's pigs, which the Frenchman claimed
had invaded his stable and home. Dr. Smith also encouraged the
Europeans to impede Mexican threats to invade Texas, and he
investigated the antislavery advocates' position toward the
republic. While in Europe, Dr. Smith received correspondence from
Texas. Although this cover has no contents, the write-up by a
previous owner states that it originated in Austin, Texas, and
carried news of the capture of San Antonio in September 1842 by
Mexican forces under General Adrian Woll.Per the sender's
directive, this letter was carried from New York to Europe on the
British Queen, a former British steamship that was sold to the
Belgian government in August 1841 for service on the
Antwerp-Cowes-New York route that started in May 1842. The service
was unsuccessful and only a few round trips were made before it was
terminated. An article in the Transatlantic Study Group newsletter
(No. 59, Oct. 1997, PDF provided online) provides sailing data that
lists the British Queen departing New York on October 7, 1842, and
arriving in Southampton on November 3 and Antwerp on November 4.
The red "Anvers" datestamp corresponds with the sailing data. We
have been unable to verify a statement from a previous owner that
only two examples of the "NAVIGATION TRANSATLANTIQUE/PAR BATEAUX A
VAPEUR" handstamp are known. James van der Linden states that there
are six recorded British Queen covers carried on the sailings to
and from Belgium, and only one with the red framed
handstamp.Illustrated in Ter Braake, Texas: The Drama of its Postal
Past (p. 247). We are grateful to James van der Linden for his
assistance with this description

A TRULY REMARKABLE POSTAL HISTORY ARTIFACT FROM SEVERAL
PERSPECTIVES.The cover is addressed to Frau A. L. Daus at
Glückstadt in Schleswig-Holstein, then under Danish crown rule,
with sender's directive "near Hamburg, Germany." The 35c Prussian
Closed Mail rate was paid with twelve 3c 1857 Issue stamps affixed
on back, which was duly noted by the sender on the address side
("Postage payd on the back of it"). This was transported by the
eastbound stage on the San Antonio-San Diego overland mail route
from Fort Davis to San Antonio, then on to Indianola. From there it
was carried by a contract steamer to New Orleans and on to New
York. At the New York foreign-mail exchange office, it was marked
and bagged for the Prussian Closed Mail route and sent on the Etna
on its first sailing as an Inman line vessel following service on
the Cunard line. The Etna departed New York on February 9, 1861,
and arrived at the port of Queenstown on February 19 and Liverpool
on February 20. The letter entered the German mail system at Aachen
on February 22, and on the following day it was transferred to the
Danish postal system in Hamburg, then delivered to nearby
Glückstadt.Fort Davis was established on October 23, 1854, under
the authority of General Persifor F. Smith of the Department of
Texas. General Smith selected the site and named it in honor of
Jefferson Davis, the Secretary of War. The fort was under the
command of Lieutenant Colonel Washington Seawell and manned by
companies of the 8th U. S. Infantry from 1854 until April 1861.
Fort Davis was the site of the U.S. military's "Camel Corps,"
championed by Jefferson Davis, which employed camels imported from
the Middle East to provide transportation in the southwestern
desert. At the time this letter was mailed, Texas was still a part
of the United States. The secession convention convened on January
28, 1861, and passed the Ordinance of Secession on February 1,
1861. The requisite popular referendum was held on February 23 and
the ordinance was passed, effective March 2, 1861. On the same
date, the Provisional Congress of the Confederate States admitted
Texas into the CSA, and on March 5 the Texas Convention accepted
the invitation to join. The U.S. postmaster of Fort Davis from 1855
to 1861 was Lieut. Thomas Gamble Pitcher. In 1861 he resigned and
was replaced by Patrick Murphy, the fort sutler, or another Murphy
named Daniel (there are two conflicting reports). Col. John R.
Baylor's Confederate cavalry brigade reached Fort Davis on April
13, 1861, and U.S. troops withdrew in compliance with orders
already received from Brig. Gen. David E. Twiggs. The Fort Davis
postmark on this cover is found on covers dated in both the U.S.
and Confederate periods. The fort functioned as a supply depot for
General Henry H. Sibley's New Mexico Campaign. In August 1862, U.S.
forces regained control of Fort Davis, but did not occupy it. The
fort remained abandoned from September 1862 until June 1867, when
it was reestablished in a different location.Ex King

Franklin ...更多 (63,68) 1861 10c green Washington vertical pair and 1c blue Franklin tied by black cork cancels with red “New York Paid 18 May 1” (1867) cds also tying 1c on small narrow cover from Rochester, N.Y. to Gibraltar. Black "Rochester NY Apr 29" cds at bottom left, red “4R” accounting handstamp at center and "Gibraltar MY 17 67" receiving cds at top right.
The 21c franking pays the single-rate (up to 1/4 oz) to Gibraltar via France under the 1857 U.S.-France Convention. The cover was carried on to Spain after arrival into France (Calais & PD handstamps at right plus transit backstamp) then on to Gibraltar. 10c pair with tiny perf flaws from edge placement, light cover soiling, otherwise fine. A fine and very scarce destination usage to Gibraltar, combining a 10c pair with the 1c Franklin to meet the 21c treaty rate
