1886/93: 1 d. maroon, horizontal pair, used on a newspaper wrapper
sent to New York, dated 1 March 1891, endorsed "Book Post", tied by
barred circle cancel in black, with Gambia Paid code B alongside
also in black, together with a Liverpool Paid Packet circular in
red (16/3). Soiling and minor imperfections. A rare example of a
printed paper rate cover, believed to be one of just two known
examples

On reverse a circular London transit in red (28/2). The extensive letter includes reports that they are dispensing with the job of Harbour Master and that he was to be appointed Quarantine Master at £40 per annum. There is also reference to the formation of the new Fitzgerald Club. Note: The 'Sea Witch' was a tea / opium clipper sailing between England and China. The author of the letter, John Robson, was sent to Bathurst to assist the Chief of Customs. Provenance: Collection John Rose, Grosvenor, London, May 2011, lot 8

1870: Envelope sent from Gambia to Paris, dated 11 February 1870,
bearing fair strike of the 'A / GAMBIA' cds (Type 3) in red,
alongside a part rate mark at top, with 'PD' circular and London
Paid cds (24/2) in red and alongside a 'Angl. / Amb. Calais' double
circle in black (24/2). To the reverse, Paris arrival in black
(24/2). The envelope has been reduced at top and the wax seal to
the flap has been removed. Scarce example. Additionally, comes with
an 1879 envelope to London endorsed "per Congo SS" bearing a strike
of 'Gambia / Paid' cds, rated '1/3' and with Liverpool Packet mark.
Heavy vertical crease, quite fragile and with flaws, but an
interesting and scarce UPU rate. A useful duo (2)

green (2) and 2 d. orange (2) tied by Bathurst Gambia code C with
Dakar and St Louis arrivals to the reverse. Whilst creased and
damaged a scarce example. The four registered have varying rates
from 5 d. to 1 s. 2½ d., of which three are sent to Hull and one to
London. Overall condition is good to fine. A useful group (5)

Comprising; 5 c. stationery card from Belgium uprated with 5 c. and cancelled by Anvers Station cds and 'Received Gambia' with a packet mail mark alongside; 1897 stationery card from USA uprated with 1 c. cancelled by San Francisco postmark and endorsed; "To any person interested in the collection of postage stamps." Also, 1899 GB 2 d. registered envelope uprated with 1 d. lilac (2) from Loughborough to Bathurst. As well as, an unusual overpaid 1898 envelope from Bathurst to Colne, Lancashire with 3 d., the back flap with printed "H.M.S. Alecto." in blue and two philatelic covers one an impressive large registered envelope with 1886/93 part set of seven values from 1 d. to 6 d. together with keyplates 1898 ½ d. (3), 1 d. (2), 2 d., 2½ d., 3 d. and 4 d. cancelled by concentric circles in black sent to Cheshire with the original printed receipt for 6 s. of postage stamps. Some flaws but generally fine

Noted is a registered 1899 envelope sent to Sierra Leone franked with set of the eight values tied by double strikes of the barred circle pineapple cancel in black, with large 'R' in oval, neatly preseneted upon exhibition pages with a selection of stamps (8) with similar postmarks including a Cameo 2 d. block of four. Also, a 1902 printed Compagnie Français de l'Afrique Occidentale envelope sent registered to Switzerland franked with ½ d. and 1 s. pair tied by a Registered / Gambia dated oval code B, with large 'R' alongside, has vertical fold and creases caused by the original 4½ ounce content, otherwise fine and a scarce rate. The OHMS is sent to hull in 1899 franked with 4 d. and 6 d. tied by barred circle with London hooded circle registered alongside. Overall a fine group with the odd fault as would be expected. Provenance: Collection R.F. Bavington-Jones, June 1986 (Sierra Leone cover) and Leonard F. Weldhen, October 2022 (Switzerland cover)
