S S KALYAN 1921 A severe gale in the eastern Mediterranean around
April 12 1921 caused havoc with shipping in the area. The Kalyan
had a large quantity of sea water get into her holds and the mail
was badly damaged, which was only noticed when it was offloaded in
Marseille on April 18. Various cachets in English, French and
German were applied, depending on where the letter was going to.
This envelope, addressed to Paris, has the French two line cachet
‘ACCIDENT EN MER / CORRESPONDANCE INNONDEE’

Wreck Mail 1863: British Post Office O.H.M.S. blue envelope mailed
from London (Feb 7) to Forres, Scotland with framed cachet on
reverse "Saved from the wreck of / the Colombo" perfectly struck in
black with Forres arrival cds (Feb 8) also in black. A rare example
of an 'ambulance' envelope from this wreck where the salvaged
letter was probably too damp to be forwarded other than as an
enclosure. Rare. Note: On 19 November 1862 the P&O Steamer
"Colombo" on a westbound return to England foundered on Minicoy
Island. She keeled over with sea water entering the hatches. The
crew and passengers were saved and some of the mail was rescued by
divers.

Wreck Mail 1892: 1 cent stationery card sent from Milwaukee, USA to
Vienna, Austria, dated 19 January 1892, carried on the ill-fated
North German Lloyd Steamer "S.S. Eider" which sank off the Isle of
Wight with much heroism displayed by the RNLI in saving the
passengers and crew on board during 31 January 1893. The envelope
struck with framed "Gehoben aus dem / geschetterten Schiff / Eider"
in violet, with "FRANCO" in black applied to denote postage had
been prepaid despite being absence due to being washed off by sea
water. Also, an arrival cds “WIEN 4/1 BESTELLT 8.3.92”. Fine.

WW II BOMBING. 1942 cover from Venezuela to Birmingham that has a three line cachet ‘DAMAGED AS A / RESULT OF / ENEMY ACTION.’ Between August 1940 and April 1943, there were 77 actual air raids on Birmingham. This double censored and charred cover would have been caught up in one of the 1942 air raids, damaged and then had the cachet applied. Fine and uncommon from Birmingham, most of the ‘Enemy Action’ covers usually being found from the south of England
