1931 cover to Otjiwarongo bearing a 1d tied by a fine strike of the
rare OTJIKURURUME datestamp of 11. 3. 31. On the reverse are
Okahandja 12 MAR and Otjiwarongo 14 MAR 31 transit and arrival
cancels. This postal agency on Farm 213 in the Okahandja district
opened in April 1925 and closed in August 1932. It is rare and the
only one I have seen in over 30 years

A ...更多 S S GERMANIA 1867. The S S Germania a 2123 tons steam ship of the H A P A G line sailed from Hamburg on September 29th and Southampton on October 2nd. Four days out she lost her propeller and had to be towed back to Southampton to have a new propeller fitted, arriving there on October 17th. The repairs were completed on October22nd and she left for New York that day, arriving November 3rd, a journey time of 36 days and a delay of three weeks. A rare cover from this incident less than 3 recorded. (The Germania was wrecked on August 7th 1869 in Newfoundland)

fell ...更多 On April 7 1886 passenger train No. 35 on the Hoosac Tunnel Line fell over the embankment between Bardwell’s ferry and West Deerfield Station and plunged 200 feet down into the Deerfield River, with many killed or injured. The post car was washed down river carrying the mail with it. This cover with a BOSTON & TROY R.P.O. APR 7 cancel has the stamp washed off and a violet two line ‘IN FITCHBURG R. R. DISASTER, APL 7 1886’ applied. According to the book ‘Railway Disaster Mail’ by Hoggarth and Gwynn, only four covers have been recorded from this accident

1897 GARRISON NY. On October 24th, the Buffalo to New York ‘State
Express’ Train No. 46 of the New York, Weehawken & Hudson River
Railroad, fell into the Hudson River south of Garrison, 50 miles
north of New York, after a retaining wall collapsed. The train
comprised of an engine and nine railway cars, most of which fell
into the river, killing twenty passengers. Among those who survived
was ‘Gentleman Jim’ Corbett, the previous world heavyweight boxing
champion, who was pulled from the river. Salvaged mail received an
explanatory label headed Post Office New York and dated 25th
October. A fine example of this scarce train incident

Railroad was wrecked near Tehama and the mail car caught fire. This
cover from Woodlands CA (31 OCT) has been damaged in the incident
and a five line label affixed that reads ‘ Damaged in railroad
wreck near Tahoma, Cal, Nov. 1 1903. Forwarded by Superintendent
Railway Mail Service, San Francisco, Cal.’ A rare cover from this
incident

1908 ARKANSAS. A 1c postal card to Birmingham, Alabama, then
redirected to Hot Springs Arkansas, that has been involved in a
train crash somewhere between those two cities. The card arrived
from New York in Birmingham on 12 March and arrived in Hot Springs
on 19 March. A two line cachet applied to the card does not
indicate where the incident happened. The cachet reads ‘Damaged in
wreck of / Train. 204, MEL.’ This is the only known postal item
from this incident

1932 CROTONE, ITALY. The Air Orient Lioré Olivier 242 flying boat
left Saigon on March 18 but was delayed between Corfu and Naples by
bad weather. As a security measure, the pilot landed at Crotone,
Calabria, Italy. During the storm, the seaplane broke its moorings
and was stranded on the beach. The mail was soaked. A single line
black ‘COURIER ACCIDENT’ cachet was applied to this cover.\The
stamps were washed off and the cover was resealed at the back with
Postes et Telegraphes official tape. Marseille 29.3.32 transit
datestamps are on the back where this cover was resealed, (Sanford

FINANCE” On the morning of 26 November 1908, the steamer Finance ...更多
FINANCE” On the morning of 26 November 1908, the steamer Finance of
the Panama Railroad Steamship Company line was hit by the steamer
“Georgic” of the White Star line off Sandy Hook in New York Harbour
and sank shortly after. The Finance had been due to sail from New
York on November 23 but had been delayed by dense fog for three
days. Three passengers and 1 crewman drowned in the incident. All
the mail on board was destined for Central America – mainly Panama
and Colon. There are two different labels and a straight line
handstamp that were applied to recovered mails. This cover posted
at HUDSON TERM. STA. NOV 17 1908, addressed to Panama City, Panama,
has the label attached to the back of the cover. A 10 DEC canceller
ties the label
“WATER WITCH” 1854. The 134 ton schooner Water Witch left ...更多
“WATER WITCH” 1854. The 134 ton schooner Water Witch left Melbourne
on 15th September for Mauritius, but was caught in a gale in the
Bass Strait. The vessel had 26 crew and passengers on board. The
Water Witch was eventually driven ashore, on King Island's western
coast. All onboard reached the shore where they later discovered
survivors of the Brahmin, a wooden three mast ship that had struck
a reef and was wrecked three kilometres south of Whistler Point, on
the west coast of King Island, that had had departed London on 5
February 1854, with 42 passengers and crew. The survivors of the
Water Witch and Brahmin, together with the former's cargo of
specie, were brought to Melbourne on 25 October. This letter was
returned to Melbourne and remailed on 26th January 1855. A red
crayon 1/- ship rate and red m/s “Detained for 2/- postage” are on
the front of the letter which arrived in Mauritius on March 14th. A
rare item ,only three covers are recorded from this wreck, of which

1920 post card from Japan that was in a train fire in a storage car
on Train No. 56 on the Chicago, Milwaukee, St Paul & Pacific
Railroad around 1.30 a.m. on 17 January 1920. A four line
explanatory cachet was applied as most of the mail was damaged and
burnt. This card has been burned and has had the upper left corner
re-attached. There was a considerable delay in recovering and
forwarding the mail as the incident happened on January 17 and a St
Paul Minn. transit cancel is only FEB 1 20 - two weeks later

SCHOMBERG 1855. When the 2284 ton S V Schomberg of the Black Ball
Line was launched in April 1855, she was the largest ship at the
time to have been built in Britain. Her maiden voyage to Australia
left Liverpool on 6 October 1855. About 100 miles from Melbourne
she ran aground on an uncharted sand spit 35 miles west of Cape
Otway, Victoria, on 27th December and broke up, becoming a total
loss. All passengers were saved, as was the mail. This letter, that
has had the stamp washed off, was posted in Exeter on OC 2 and has
been endorsed ‘Per Clipper Ship Schomberg from Liverpool Oct 5
1855’. Sydney and Bathurst JA 2 1856 transit and arrival cancels
are on the back of the letter. A very scarce shipwreck with less
than 10 items recorded

1949 envelope from London addressed to Pietermaritzburg. Straight
line 'RECEIVED DAMAGED BY FIRE' In the early hours of 4th August
1949 a carriage on the train travelling between Ladysmith and
Pietermaritzburg caught fire, The train stopped at Frere station
where the crew managed to contain the fire. On arrival at
Pietermaritzburg the van was sealed, then escorted by police to
Durban. The majority of the mail was destroyed
