South Africa/Boer War/Cape Mafeking 1900-1901 Boer War remarkable usage of a printed Wrapper for “Cartridges/ S.A. Ball / 303 inch / Cordite” by a British Sergeant of the 2nd Warwickshire Regiment, as a Christmas / New Year Greetings Card. Addressed to a relative in Rugby, England, it is franked by a ZAR 1d. stamp overprinted V.R.I. by the British but posted from Burghersdorp in the Cape. The stamp is cancelled by the Cape barred oval numeral 226 of that town. Unusual acceptance of a Transvaal stamp in the Cape. The Wrapper has a hand drawn greeting, “PRETORIA DIAMOND HILL/Arms of the Regiment/BELFAST/Compliments of the Season/to all”. Together with another ammunition Wrapper from a different correspondence with a complete letter “Four Miles N.E. Zand Spruit/August 23d, 1901”.
