perforated with diamond cancellation "10" LONDON on cover to Gustav
Charchy, Grand Hotel du Louvre in Paris, France. Additionally,
French transit double circle postmark "ANGL., AME. CALAIS B, 19 NOV
61", red "PD" and on the backside of the letter Fancy Geometric
Postmark "LONDON, NO 18 61". In the 1860s, Mr Charchy lived in
London (16, Mincing-lane) and held business contacts in France. He
had a Partnership with Etienne Ernest Boulan, Wine Merchants, of
Bordeaux (No. 24, Cours du Jardin Public) that lasted until July
1864.

This stamp was printed and prepared for use in 1860 in anticipation of a change in postal rates. Changes did not come to fruition, but approximately 10,000 sheets were already printed. Most of the supply was destroyed and it is unknown how or why unused examples managed to get out with three or four even postally used. collection of all plates of the 1864 1p Red with the exception of
Plates 77, 83, 91 and 133, the scarce No. 225 with original gum,
h.r., and natural gum creases, spot check show most with full or
part original gum, also includes 1870, 1/2p Rose (58; SG 49) with a
complete collection of all fifteen plates in similar condition, a
few small flaws should be expected but an overall Fine collection,
while complete plates of used stamps are offered with some
frequency, it is rare to find a near complete group in unused
condition which would take slight effort to complete, the total
catalogue value should prove to be quite substantial

bantam ½ d. rose pl. 6, two examples used with 1 s. green pl. 4
cancelled by the London duplex and prepaying 1 s. 1 d. for a 1⁄2
ounce ship letter to New South Wales via Brindisi. Very fine and a
scarce cover from the short lived rate via Brindisi to the
Australian Colonies, this being the second transportation of mail
via the Brindisi route. Route: Departed London, England 2 Dec 1870
by rail to Brindisi. P&O Line: Departed Brindisi (6 Dec) per
“Tomaso” to Alexandria (9 Dec); overland to Suez; “Mongolia” (12
Dec) to Galle (28 Dec); “Avoca” (29 Dec) via King Georges Sound 12
Jan 1871 and Melbourne (18 Jan) to Sydney (21 Jan); by rail to
Newcastle, arriving 22 Jan 1871 (51 days). Note: The 1 s. 1 d. rate
to the Australian Colonies was only available for 15 months from
October 1869. By way of comparison, only about fifteen covers are
recorded from the Australian Colonies to England for this route and
