Overland via Southampton 1864 (Sept 26): Cover from Adelaide, South
Australia to Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA bearing South Australia 1864
rouletted 2 d. bright vermillion, 6 d. greenish blue and 6 d. dull
ultramarine (corner faults) cancelled by Adelaide datestamp and
prepaying 1 s. 2 d. for a ½ ounce ship letter to the United States.
Postal markings include “8” (pence) manuscript in red credit to the
USA and re-rated to “16 CENTS” with handstamp in red for
Transatlantic shipment via an American packet. “CHICAGO Am. PKT/ 5”
denoting 5 cents inland postage to be paid by the recipient and
further rerated with Depreciated Currency “11 / US NOTES” at
Chicago if the addressee was paying in United States of America
banknotes instead of coins. A fine and unique cover. Note: During
the American Civil War from 1861-1865, inflation caused banknote
currency to rapidly devalue, and unpaid letters were being paid
with these inflationary notes. In March 1863, the Postmaster
General implemented a premium system if the recipients paid by
banknotes instead of coins, leading to a period of what is called
“fractional / depreciated currency”. For almost two years, dual
rating handstamps were applied until May 1865. Detailed notes on
United States Depreciated Currency are included with this lot. The
only Depreciated Currency cover recorded on mail from the
Australian Colonies. Route - Australasian Steam Navigation Co:
Departed Adelaide 27 Sept 1864 per “Rangatira” to King George’s
Sound. P&O Line: Departed King George’s Sound (3 Oct) per
“Northam” to Galle (17 Oct); “Nubia” (24 Oct) to Suez; overland to
