1936 ‘SCIPIO’ MIRABELLA BAY, CRETE. On the 22nd August 1936 the Imperial Airlines ‘Scipio’ was landing at Mirabella Bay when one of the pilots inadvertently set the tailplane at maximum incident, making the plane nose heavy. The plane dived into the sea and sank within a few minutes. The passengers and crew all escaped. Much of the mail had the stamps washed off and received various cachets . This cover from India has had the stamps washed off and has a two line ‘DAMAGED BY / SEA WATER’ cachet. (Sanford type ‘g’)
