Nov. 24" (with spelling error in town name) on buff cover to Capt. T. L. Scott, Terry's Regiment (8th Texas Cavalry), Shreveport La., left edge slightly clipped toward top (but clear of stamp), mended with paper VERY FINE. ONE OF THE FINEST INDEPENDENCE POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL COVERS AND THE CLEAREST IMPRESSION OF THE FOUR RECORDED stamps WITH SMALL "10" AND MANUSCRIPT "PD", SCOTT 41X3.Postal records show three different Confederate postmasters of Independence, Texas: William J. Hale (appointed Jul. 12, 1861, resigned); George R. Seward (appointed Dec. 28, 1861); and John McKnight (appointed Jan. 19, 1863). Four of the five recorded Independence provisional covers have not been reliably assigned yeardates, but the cover offered here (CWPS census no. IND-TX-A01-001) is postmarked July 31 and has a clearly written July 29, 1862, yeardate, which would position it during Seward's tenure. Schumacher, a Houston collector, sometime around 1919. They are all addressed to Captain T. L. Scott of Terry's Regiment, which refers to the 8th Texas Cavalry Regiment assembled by Col. Benjamin Franklin Terry, also known as the Terry Rangers. The regiment was mustered into service at Houston on September 9, 1861. Colonel Terry was killed in action at the battle of Woodsonville, Kentucky, on December 8, 1861. After a change in command, the Terry Rangers engaged in the battles of Shiloh (April 6-8, 1862), Perryville (October 8, 1862), Murfreesboro (December 31, 1862-January 2, 1863), Chickamauga (September 19-20, 1863), and Chattanooga (November 24-25, 1863); in the Atlanta campaign (May 1-September 2, 1864); and as raiders in Kentucky and Tennessee under Lt. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest. The covers are addressed to Captain Scott at Shreveport La., Sandy Point Tex. and Houston Tex.CWPS census no. IND-TX-A01-002. The uprated rate was for the over-500 miles distance rate in effect through June 30, 1862. The CWPS census no. Substantial off-cover collection balance of several hundred stamps, includes every General Issue Scott number from 1-14 including five 10c "Ten" (9, three unused) and 10c Frameline (10), begins with 10c Blue, Hoyer & Ludwig Lithographed Essay (C.S.A. E11) and continues through each issue with great depth on many, both used and unused examples of most, the more common Nos. 6-7 and 11-12 also show numerous blocks including plate blocks of the later issues, ends with two pairs and six singles of No. 14, wide range of cancels on the used including some better like Tuscaloosa fancy, also many varieties like three "white tie" No. 7, horizontal gutter block of No. 8, other gutter blocks or gutter pairs, couple Officially Perforated, others, condition on some denominations is mixed with small faults or margins impinging, particularly on the Nos. 9-10, but overall plenty of attractive stamps are present and substantial value, an impressive balance better appreciated by reviewing our website PDF, SCV exceeds $33,000
