1908, 4¢ brown, imperf. (Scott 314A), wavy line machine cancel, rich chocolate color, full Schermack perfs at right and clearly visible at left; slight surface scuffs at left are barely visible (if at all) and do not detract from the appearance of this extremely rare stamp, Very Fine, 46 used examples are known to exist consisting of 32 off cover singles, 3 singles on 3 covers, a used pair off cover, 2 strips of 3 off cover (one is part of the Miller collection) and one strip of 3 on cover; the majority have faults, with 1984 and 2012 P.F. certificates, the former saying "scrapes".
Scott $45,000.
The Schermack Stamp Vending Machine Co. of Detroit Michigan was the only company to request the 4¢ issue imperforate, and in May 1908, the company received 25 full sheets of four panes of 100 each (10,000 total stamps), all of which were made into coils with Type III perfs and given to the Winfield Printing Company. Winfield used about 60% on a mailing for Hamilton Carhartt and about 40% on a mailing for Burroughs Adding Machine Company. The imperforate 4¢ would have a very limited use because 4¢ did not pay a proper rate by itself. 4¢ could pay the first class 2 oz rate (double weight), or the 4 lb second class periodical mailed by the publisher rate, or another seldom used third or fourth class rate.

1908, 5¢ blue, imperf. (Scott 315), horizontal pair, o.g., lightly hinged at top center, large balanced margins all around, beautiful blue color, Extremely Fine, an outstanding pair, with 2009 P.S.E. certificate for block of 4, this being the top pair.
Scott $725.

1908, 1¢ blue green, experimental coil, perf. 12 horizontally (Scott 316), o.g., lightly hinged, gorgeous dark color, nearly perfect centering, completely sound, Extremely Fine. In the last 15 years, only 1 single, 1 line pair and 6 pairs have appeared at public auction, and each pair is different and offered only once. Furthermore, zero no. 316's in any format have been submitted for grading, which verifies what experienced collectors and dealers already know -- that virtually all of them are poorly centered. So if you collect the best, and you want to fill that empty space that is in nearly everyone's collection, we strongly suggest that you bid aggressively for this incredible stamp. This is one of the rarest coils in US philately with only 3 line pairs (1 rejoined, 1 faulty and 1 has not been into the PF in decades needs to be reexamined for authenticity and condition), 7 pairs (3 faulty) and 5 singles (1 faulty) are known to exist. Ex Engel, McNall, Zoellner & Robert Hall (as pair); broken into singles after Hall sale, with 1992, 2015 and 2018 P.F. certificates, the first two are color copies for pair, this being the top stamp, 1961 P.F.C. for strip of 3 no longer accompanies.
Scott $150,000.
