1853 (April 17) mourning envelope inwards from Great Britain to "Lieut C Pasco RN, Police Magistrate, Williams Town, Port Phillip" with QV Line Engaved 2d blue White Lines Added imperforate strip of 4 'OH-OK' (the left-hand unit cut-into at left & base, the others with margins close to large) tied by four fine to very fine strikes of Barred Numeral '620' cancels with light but identifiable 'STONEHOUSE' unframed cds in blue despatch overtruck by similar 'PLYMOUTH' unframed cds in black, London 'SHIP-LETTER' crowned cds in red, largely very fine 'SHIP LETTER/JY*7/1853/MELBOURNE' crowned oval transit in red where rated '5'[d] in black on the face, and light but identifiable 'WILLIAMS TOWN/JY*9/[....]/[....]IA' crowned oval arrival in black, all except the London marking on the reverse, minor blemishes & small adhesion on reverse clear of the markings. The rate was Great Britain 8d ship letter and Victoria 3d inwards ship letter plus 2d inland delivery. Sent by Admiral John Pasco to his son; as a Lieutenant, John Pasco had served with Admiral Nelson as Signal Officer on board 'HMS Victory' at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805; he died less than six months after this letter was sent, on 16.11.1853. Port Phillip District was renamed 'Victoria' on 1.7.1851. Ex John Barwis

1854 (April 24) envelope inwards from Great Britain to "Mr Thomas Hichens Sincock, Detective Police Reporting Office, Swanston Street, Melbourne" endorsed "Per Great Britain" with QV Line Engaved 2d blue White Lines Added imperforate strip of 4 'RG-RJ' (the outside units cut-into at base, the other margins close to large) tied by four fine to very fine strikes of Barred Numeral '636' cancels with identifiable 'REDRUTH' unframed cds in red despatch, London cds in red and Liverpool 'SHIP LETTER' crowned cds in black transits, and largely fine complete Melbourne 'SHIP LETTER/FREE/JY 12/1854/G.P.O VICTORIA' arrival in red (earliest recorded date) all on the reverse, horizontal fold & closed edge tears clear of the adhesives & largely clear of the markings. Although endorsed per 'Great Britain', the item was carried by P&O 'Simla' departing Liverpool 27.4.1854 arriving Melbourne 12.7.1854. With the introduction of the 6d Uniform ship letter rate on 1.10.1854, additional inland rates were no longer charged. However, the 'FREE' marking indicates that the charging of inland rates was abolished earlier. Ex John Barwis

1950 (Aug 4) airmail envelope from England with KGVI 1/- brown tied by Torquay Devon machine cancel, to "ER Leigh Parkin Esq, c/o Cable & Wireless Ltd, FOR COCOS, PO Box 146, Singapore" with very fine strike of 'COCOS IS/("20 8 50")/PER ("Frigate")' handstamp in violet on the reverse, small closed tear clear of the arrival marking and a few minor transmission marks. Carried by airmail to Singapore and onwards by Royal Naval Frigate HMS 'Glen Dhu' arriving at Cocos on 20.8.1950 (or 22.8.1950 ?)

1951 (April 25) airmail envelope from Great Britain with London 1/- meter in red, to "The Librarian, Staff Library, Cocos Islands, Cable & Wireless Ltd, PO Box 146, Singapore", makeshift typed 'QANTAS/SURVEY FLIGHT/CATALINA/VH-EBA/DARWIN-COCOS/VIA DJAKARTA' label tied to the reverse by a superb complete strike of 'C&W LTD/30MAY1951/COCOS' arrival backstamp, small closed tear clear of the label & arrival marking and a few minor transmission marks. Colin Riddell's similar example - with KGVI 1/- stamp - sold at our auction of 3.3.2019 for $1357 (Sale 233 Lot 2458)

Small collection on old-time leaves including 1840 Penny Black lightly cancelled (3 margins) and 1841 Penny Red block of 4 */** with '... the RIGHT HAND SIDE of the Letter ...' marginal imprint (the left-hand units cut-into at left, the right-hand units with large margins; some creasing; Cat £3000+), other Line-Engraved & Embossed issues including a Penny Stars Plate Number study, then Surface-Printed range to 10/- including 4d sage-green single & pair, 2/- blue and an apparently very fine 2/- brown (Cat £4250) plus 1/- brown 'GOVT/PARCELS' overprint, KEVII to 10/-, and a smattering of later issues to KGVI, a few commercial perfins, some aging marks, hinge thins or other mostly minor faults but many are fine to very fine.

1841 QV Line Engraved Penny Red 1d red group between SG 8-12 comprising seven singles and a horizontal pair in a range of shades one with a decidedly 'orange' tinge, stated to be from Plates 23 [CJ], 53 [QC] with small-part Corner Guideline, 60 [NK] with Ivory Head, 64 [MJ] with Distorted Star at Upper-Left, 101 [QI], 110 [JD], 124 [HH] with Distorted Frame at Upper-Left, and 149 Alphabet II pair [FH-FI] both units with Ivory Head, each with margins just clear to large except the pair just touched at upper-left, most with virtually full or large-part gum, those from Plates 60, 110 & 124 without gum, Cat £5400+ for unused basic shade singles. 1865 (Jan 25) mourning envelope to Melbourne, Australia endorsed "via Marseilles" with QV Line Engraved 1d red-brown x2 & Surface Printed Small Corner Letters 4d red x2 tied by Dublin-186 duplex cancels, London transit of the same day on the face, Melbourne 'MR15/65' arrival cds in blue on the reverse. Carried by 'Ellora' departing Marseilles 28.1.1865 to Alexandria and overland to Suez, by 'Mooltan' departing 7.2.1865 to Galle, Ceylon and 'Bombay' to Melbourne. The 10d per ½oz 'via Marseilles' rate applied from 1863 until 1870, when the route was altered to transit via Brindisi due to the Franco-Prussian War, and the rate was reduced to 9d later that year.
