La necessità strategica di proteggere le rotte tra i possedimenti meridionali, Regno di Napoli e Regno di Sicilia, e le coste di Genova e del Nord, nonché i porti per il Regno di Sardegna, indussero la Spagna a ritagliarsi una sorta di enclave coincidente geograficamente con il promontorio dell'Argentario. La logica militare fu quella dei cosiddetti Presidios, già sperimentata da circa mezzo secolo in Nord Africa, consistente nell'imposizione di piazzeforti e guarnigioni nel territorio da porre sotto controllo.
THE COAST DEFENCE OF THE STATE OF THE ROYAL PROTECTIONS OF TUSCANY FROM XVI TO XIX CENTURY
The strategic need to protect the routes between the southern possessions, Kingdom of Naples and Kingdom of Sicily, and the coasts of Genoa and of the North, as much as the harbours to the Kingdom of Sardinia, led Spain to curve out a sort of enclave geographically corresponding to the promontory of Argentario. The military strategy was the one of the so called Presidios, already tested almost half a century before in North Africa, and consisting of the imposition of strongholds and garrisons in the territory to be controlled.

STORICO
Con questo volume, che segue i tre precedentemente editi di "Sidi El Barrani", "Tobruk" ed «El Alamein», l'Ufficio Storico ha portato a termine, in maniera organica e alla luce di fonti documentarie comparate, la rielaborazione delle otto monografie, pubblicate nell'immediato dopoguerra, relative alle operazioni condotte dall'Esercito Italiano in Africa Settentrionale dal giugno 1940 al maggio 1943. Come i precedenti anche questo lavoro non si limita ad un'analisi tecnica e operativa delle operazioni - in questo caso riferite allo scacchiere tunisino - ma, secondo un criterio metodologico più attuale, allarga il campo d'indagine agli aspetti politico-militari di ambo le parti.

With this volume, that follows the three previously published about "Sidi El Barrani", "Tobruk" and "El Alamein", the History Bureau has finished the re-elaborated version of the eight monographs, published immediately after war, relevant to the operations led by the Italian Army in North Africa from June 1940 to May 1943. Like the previous ones, also this work is not restricted to a technical and operative analysis of the operations - in this case related to the Tunisian theatre - but it extends the investigation field to the political-military aspects of both parts.
