Crowned Circle Handstamps. New Zealand. 1850 (2 Sep) entire letter from John Hogg, watchmaker of . Wanganui to William Fox, Principal Agent of the New Zealand Company in Wellington. On the front is a blurred Crowned circle "paid/ at/ petre new zealand" in red and unframed Wellington New Zealand c.d.s. (6.9). On the back is a black unframed Petre New Zealand (3.9) c.d.s. Manuscript "Per Paid", on the front with "8" denoting eight pence paid by the sender, a double rate item as there were enclosures. Accompanied by a transcription of the letter which deals with signatures required for a land claim, with some biographical detail on John Hogg. S.G. CC5. Photo. (Estimate £500 - £600)

Crowned Circle Handstamps. New Zealand. 1844 (16 May) entire letter from John Seal Bird in Wellington to his sister Lady Maxwell in London, with red framed "paid at/wellington" on the front, oval "wellington/ (crown)/ my 18/ 1844/ new zealand" on the reverse and red London receiving datestamp (5.10), manuscript '4' showing four pence paid but deleted as a double rate letter, also '1/4' to be paid by the recipient. Endorsed "Tyne", mail was taken off the Tyne in the Channel after she became stuck on Margate sands. John Bird arrived as a New Zealand Company settler with a land allocation but struggled. An advert from the New Zealand Gazette and Wellington Spectator gives his address at Te Aro Flat and his occupation as Cabinet-maker, Upholsterer and Paper Hanger. The long transcribed letter thanks Lady Maxwell for a gift of £25, building a house, the natives demanding a high price for their land without paying "utu", buying a section, buying a brick making machine and a flour mill; most interesting. Lake Lefroy Goldfield Cycle Mail. 1897 (Apr.) 6d. pink on greenish paper, unused with large part original gum (sweated), good colour, light corner crease, black spot on face and some blue marks at lower right, nevertheless a presentable example of this rare stamp; also two page 1896 (14 Feb.) letter from the Palace Hotel written by Frank Maskell (addressee's name and address excised) in which he writes about the service - "The Lake Lefroy Cycle Service after a career of about 4 months from Feb. to June 1897, has ceased to ??? since the latter date; there is now a Govt subsidised mail-coach running bi-weekly to Red Hill the new township & centre of the district. In February last year there was a big alluvial "rush" to the place & and in company with Mr. H.L. Hillier, I started the cycle service between the rush & Coolgardie 45 miles distant, we made a charge of 6d. per letter each way for posting and collecting them at the Coolgardie Post Restante and in April we had these stamps printed.". China. 1883 (13 June) mourning envelope addressed to London bearing a neat strike of "kiukiang customs/mail matter" handstamp (partly over the black border) with France Peace and Commerce 25c. tied by "shang-hai/chine" (15.6) c.d.s. with a further strike alongside. The reverse bearing a fair strike of "customs/kiukiang" despatch c.d.s. in red, a fair strike of Customs Shanghai (15.6) and London arrival datestamps. There is some minor edge wear at top right not effecting the adhesive otherwise fine and a scarce example of Customs Employee's mail privilege. Photo (Estimate £300 - £500)
