1869: Line-Engraved 2 pence blue, plate 14, horizontal pair, good colour and perforations mostly fine, tied by duplex “A25 MALTA 9 JU 76”, to a mourning envelope, sent to Yokohama, Japan. Reverse, with transit cds “HONG KONG - MARINE SORTER / SINGAPORE-TO HONG-KONG JY 15 17 76”. Envelope reduced slightly at top, flap missing and small opening tear behind first stamp reinforced at back and second adhesive perforations trimmed top right. A fine and rare example of the “four pence” rate from Malta to Japan, used within the last month this rate was valid. One of five examples known. Note: The new GPU “India & Far East” rate of 8 pence began on 1 July 1876. Remark: The addressee Basil Hall Chamberlain (1850-1935) at this date was teaching at the Imperial Naval Academy in Tokyo, he was later a Professor at the Tokyo Imperial University, writing some of the earliest translations of haiku into English.
