Biafra, 1967, Nigerian civil war provisional markings on covers and cut from covers, 3 internal covers addressed to the editor of Catholic Life magazine at Calabar with a boxed "BIAFRA 4d POSTAGE PAID" handstamp -- 1) violet with "Uyo Telegraphs Nigeria 5 SP 67" circular datestamp, 2) violet with "ABA 28 AU 67" circular datestamp, 3) black "Port Harcourt Nigeria 5 SP 67" double circle datestamp overlapping the handstamp, plus 22 cut pieces from covers with boxed "BIAFRA (denom) POSTAGE PAID" handstamp with 19 dated August 21-28, 1967 and 3 undated, consisting of ¼d (1 violet), 2d (2 violet; Uyo Telegraphs & Enugu (struck twice on latter)), and 4d (12 violet including 6 Calabar, 2 Uyo Telegraphs, Onitsha, Enugu, and 7 black including 4 Abakaliki, 2 Nkwogwu P.O. and Umuahia, covers are Very Fine, fully imaged online, this is a very scarce group, the ¼d value is the rarest of the 3 values, then the 2d.
Biafra was established on 30 May 1967 by Igbo military officer and Eastern Region governor Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu. The Nigerian military attempted to reclaim the territory of Biafra, resulting in the beginning of the Nigerian Civil War. Biafra was officially recognized as a sovereign and independent country by Gabon, Haiti, Côte d'Ivoire, Tanzania, and Zambia while receiving de facto recognition and covert military support from France, Portugal, Israel, South Africa, and Rhodesia. After nearly three years of war, during which around two million Biafran civilians died, Nigeria declared victory.

1968, "SOVEREIGN BIAFRA" overprints, extraordinary mint balance of apprx. 276 stamps of all denominations, comprising three complete sets plus plenty of further material (17x½d., 11x1d., 11x1½d., 10x2d., 13x4d., 14x6d., 14x9d., 7x1s.3d., 14x2s.6d., 12x5s., 9x10s., 11x£1), also several specialities like 90 stamps ½d. and 1d. with differing, smaller surcharge "SOVEREIGN BIAFRA / BIAFRA-FRANCE FREINDSHIP 1968" (and two of them double/one inverted), two stamps ½d. showing a larger, thicker surcharge than issued, and 1s.3d.+2s.6d. each with missing red surcharge (SG 12b, 13b). Some stamps are showing some gum irregularities which is rather normal for that issue since remainders of postage stamps have been used (to be seen at a fixed vertical strip of the 2d. value with distinctive paper folds), and not necessarily a fault in the common sense.
