1857 (March 7): Soldier's Letter from Sgt. Wood, of the 5th Fusiliers in Mauritius and sent to Trenton, New Jersey, USA; countersigned by Commanding Officer at left. Reverse with oval framed "PACKET LETTER / MAURITIUS" and handstamped "2" (pence) for the unpaid amount due in London (double the concessionary rate), sent onwards from London to Boston where struck with "BOSTON / BR. PACKET" cds (May 21) in black, Petterson cds (in error, with "Missent to" alongside) and thence to Trenton with charge mark of "9" cents due (2 d. unpaid = 4 cents + USA internal charge of 5 c. = 9 cents due). It is interesting to note that the "9" is an inverted "6" as there was no handstamp in Boston for this rate. Full contents with the lot - the Sergeant is looking forward to leaving the Army as the (Northumberland) 5th Fusiliers are departing for Hong Kong. Some ageing due to conditions and journey but a rare usage.
