Crowned Circle Handstamps. New Zealand. 1844 (16 May) entire letter from John Seal Bird in Wellington to his sister Lady Maxwell in London, with red framed "paid at/wellington" on the front, oval "wellington/ (crown)/ my 18/ 1844/ new zealand" on the reverse and red London receiving datestamp (5.10), manuscript '4' showing four pence paid but deleted as a double rate letter, also '1/4' to be paid by the recipient. Endorsed "Tyne", mail was taken off the Tyne in the Channel after she became stuck on Margate sands. John Bird arrived as a New Zealand Company settler with a land allocation but struggled. An advert from the New Zealand Gazette and Wellington Spectator gives his address at Te Aro Flat and his occupation as Cabinet-maker, Upholsterer and Paper Hanger. The long transcribed letter thanks Lady Maxwell for a gift of £25, building a house, the natives demanding a high price for their land without paying "utu", buying a section, buying a brick making machine and a flour mill; most interesting. S.G. CC8 (Estimate £150 - £200)

Overland via Marseilles 1858 (July 16): Entire from Melbourne,
Victoria to Gotheborg, Sweden bearing 1854 Victoria Woodblock 6 d.
dull orange with four margins, cancelled by barred numeral “1” of
Melbourne and prepaying 6 d. and underpaid 1 s. 2 d. for a ½ ounce

The part pre-payment of 6 d. was not accepted by the Swedish postal
authorities and the entire was taxed as completely unpaid. Transit
datestamps of Melbourne, 'Australie V. Suez', Paris, Hamburg and
Gothenburg. A remarkable taxed cover from the Australian Colonies,
unrecorded by Ben Palmer, being the fourth earliest cover from
Victoria to Sweden. It is believed that there are just three
examples recorded of this Swedish tax handstamp. Fine and very
rare. Route - European and Australian Royal Mail Co: Departed
Melbourne per “Emeu” 16 July 1858 via Galle (7 Aug) to Suez;
overland to Alexandria. P&O Line: “Teviot” (26 Aug) to Malta

the 4 April until the addressee had prepaid the additional 1 s. 2
d. (in manuscript within the 'Detained' handstamp). However, the
additional amount should have been 1 s. 8 d. for a total of 2 s. 2
d. via Marseilles. The additional 1 s. 2 d. only prepaid the letter
