1855/63: 6 d. slate-lilac on blued paper, two single examples, formerly a pair with just shaved to generally large margins all round, used with 1864 1 s. green pair on 1864 double rate registered envelope to Leyden, Netherlands with embossed "from Swellendam" in maroon at top left and manuscript "British & Foreign Rate Paid + Registered", the adhesives tied by CGH obliterators in black and the 1 s. pair additionally by "♚ / REGISTERED" in red applied in London. Reverse with oval framed "SWELLENDAM" despatch datestamp in red (Sept 18) and carried on the Union Steam Ship Co. "R.M.S. Briton" with London registered arrival datestamp (Oct 24). Manuscript "2/5d." credit to UK at right in red crayon. The 6 d. values probably lifted and replaced but a superb and extremely rare combination cover, one of the highlights of both the Bertolaja and Holyoake collections. Note: The single rate to the Netherlands in 1864 was 1/3 d. per ½ ounce + 6 d. registration. Provenance: Collection A. 1864: 1 d. deep brown-red, a pair and single 1855/63 4 d. blue (Pos. XII 8 B), each with close to large margins all round, used on 1864 cover from Cape Town to Newcastle, Natal paying the 6 d. rate, tied by barred oval numeral "1" cancels on Cape Town in black. "CAPE TOWN / CAPE COLONY" circular datestamp (Dec 17) at right. Carried on the "R.M.S. Anglian" which left Cape Town on 18 December arriving at Algoa Bay on 20 December and Durban on 24 Dec ember. Side flaps missing from the cover and with envelope restored at upper right, however it is interesting to note that this was the sole Triangular Perkins Bacon combination cover in the Dale-Lichtenstein collection. 1892: formula post card, “1½d” surcharge on 3 pence blue, first printing, good colour, perforations mainly fine, tied by coat of arms with squared circle alongside “BLOEMFONTEIN O.V.S. 12 SEP 92” sent to Crefeld, arrival cds “CREFELD 3 10 92”. Perforations at top dulled due to proximity to edge. Fine. Scarce early use. Comes with an 1889, ½ penny Cape of Good Hope stationery card inbound to Orange Free State from Johannesburg uprated with 1 pence carmine.
