Great Britain, 1854, 1sh Green, Embossed (5a; SG 55). Die 2, original gum, h.r., tight but clear margins on each side, fresh color, crisp embossing, faint overall soiling VERY FINE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1854 ONE-SHILLING GREEN EMBOSSED ISSUE. SELDOM ENCOUNTERED IN SOUND ORIGINAL-GUM CONDITION WITH MARGINS ON ALL SIDES. The presses used to print the Embossed issue allowed for only one impression to be printed at a time. This resulted in small (or non-existent) and irregular spacing between stamps. They were cut apart with scissors, often carelessly, resulting in the vast majority having little or no margins on one or more sides. To find a stamp containing four margins, full original gum, crisp embossing, and from the scarcer Die 2 - is quite remarkable. With clear 1996 E. Diena certificate. Scott $22,500. SG £16,000

Great Britain, 1848, 10p Red Brown (6; SG 57). Die 4, original gum with slight tinge of brown, minor h.r., huge bottom sheet margin measuring 6mm, full to ample at sides, just barely touching at top, bold color, clear embossing, with "SD" in circle handstamp in bottom margin FINE AND RARELY ENCOUNTERED ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1848 10-PENCE RED BROWN EMBOSSED ISSUE. The Embossed Issue is notorious for having tight margins between stamps. An original-gum example such as this is particularly rare. As noted on both certificates, the origin of the "SD" is still unknown. It is presumed to be "Stamping Department" from Somerset House. We feel this could have been done on the top sheet of a stack of sheets indicating a check of approval. With 1991 R.P.S. and 1997 Raybaudi certificates. Scott $12,000. SG £8,500
