1870 (Nov 2): Ballon Monté entire accompanied with rare Official Message sent by the passenger from the balloon flight. The entire with printed endorsement 'Par Ballon Monté', carried on board balloon no. 22 the 'Fulton', sent to Saint-Gengoux-le-Royal, dated 31 October 1870, franked with Siège 20 c. blue, tied by Paris Star '11', with 'Paris Rue St. Honore' cds. in black alongside. Reverse with a 'Magoh' and 'St. Gengoux-le Royal' arrival cds. dated 4 November 1870. Small corner fault lower right of entire and light vertical filing fold, well clear of adhesive. The rare 'Bureau de Dépèche Officille ou de Service-Official Message' (229 x 159 mm.), black on yellow thin paper, is sent from Angers, where Louis Joseph Ernest Cézanne, the passenger on the Fulton balloon, immediately sent a message to Tours, which reads: "Arrived by balloon from Paris. Health is good. Will arrive at Tours tonight. Telegraph Marguerite" (his wife). The message arrived the same day and was datestamped 'Tours' 2 November 1870. Has been folded vertically in two places, one with a slit and a horizontally crease at base. Very rare Official Message from the corresponding balloon flight sent by the passenger. The only Official Message by a Ballon Monté passenger currently known. Note: The Fulton took-off from Paris at 8:30 am. on 2 November 1870, the pilot was Le Gloarnec, sailor of the marines, his passenger Ernest Cézanne, Engineer of Bridges. They carried four mail bags. They landed safely in an unoccupied zone after enduring severe cold for 6 hours, landing north-west of Chalet, 290km south-east from Paris. They were taken to nearby Angers by locals and then onto Tours the seat of the Government in exile, arriving 3 November at 2 am. The pilot Le Gloarnec died a few days later from pneumonia. Ex.
