Black company frank on 1870 3¢ Reay entire to San Francisco, light "Thomes & Skaddens Express, Susanville Cal., Au 1" cds canceling with blue "Wells, Fargo & Co., Reno" oval date stamp alongside, Very Fine, a nice usage of this early 1870's express which ran between Susanville, Cal. and Reno, Nevada connecting with Wells, Fargo & Co., only nine usages with this frank are recorded. Wells, Fargo & Co., "Paid 25 Cts." Black printed frank and surcharge on 3¢ pink entire (U35) canceled by blue "Wells, Fargo & Co., Carson City, Nov 11" oval datestamp, from the Sinsheimer correspondence to San Francisco, Cal., 1863 pencil docketing; restored corner at lower right and tear at bottom, Fine and scarce surcharged frank. Thomas No. WFE-211; Estimate $150 - 200. Operated by Wells, Fargo & Co. from August 11th 1862 to 1865. They carried mail and news from Virginia City to Placerville. From Placerville via railroad to Sacramento then by boat to San Francisco. In addition to the adhesive Pony stamps, there were printed envelopes "Paid 25 cts" which were started in 1863. This was for Special Delivery and included "Rapid Letter Service" along the "Pony Trail" to San Francisco

Margins large to just shaving frameline at top right, tied by light blue "Wells, Fargo & Co., Virginia City, N.T., Oct 20" oval date stamp on 1861, 3¢ pink entire (U35) to San Francisco, with second strike canceling indicia, bold blue "B.F.H. & Co., Oct 19, 1863" company cds at center (B.H. Hastings & Co., bankers) used in lieu of express frank, pencil "Oct 21" receiving docketing at left; right edge including small portion of indicia expertly restored, Very Fine. Scott No. 143L8; Estimate $1,500 - 2,000. The absence of the Wells Fargo frank on this entire is in accordance with a little known agreement between Wells Fargo and other banking institutions allowing them to transmit, via Wells Fargo's express lines, envelopes displaying the bank's handstamp in lieu of the Wells Fargo frank. B.H. Hastings briefly had a field office in Virginia City, therefore complying with this agreement

Pacific Union Express, Paid (Haller FP4) in ribbon design printed express company on 3c. pink on white entire (U58) with blue all-over lithograph for the Union Hotel and General Stage Office Oroville addressed to Worcester and cancelled by black grid and showing Oregon Stage co. Marysville blue despatch d.s. and arrival c.d.s. for the same day. Slightly reduced at left and with light toning, still quite fresh and fine. A very scarce cover, this company operated from Portland to Lincoln (1865 to 1867), but its markings are elusive, illustrated in Letters of Gold. (Estimate £200 - £300)

Perfect strike of blue oval handstamp on paste-up envelope affixed to 3¢ pink entire (U58) canceled by "Esmeralda Nev., Dec 27 '65" cds to New York N.Y., manuscript "Due 3" rating; edge faults, Fine and rare. Estimate; $5,000 - 7,500. ONE OF ONLY FIVE RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE WELLINGTON EXPRESS OVAL HANDSTAMP, ONE OF WHICH IS CONTAINED IN THE WILTSEE COLLECTION. Daniel Wellington and his partner, S.P. Dorsey, ran a stage and express service from Carson City to Esmeralda, Nev. From that location, it ran to Benton, through the Owens Valley to the San Carlos mining area that is located around present day Independence Cal. This service included the towns of Camp Independence, San Carlos, Kearsage and Bend City.All five of the usages are paste-ups from the Mary Bush correspondence to New York N.Y
