Worldwide Thematic Collection – FISH & FISHERIES, 113 Exhibition Pages An important, wide-ranging thematic collection devoted to fish and fisheries, mounted on 113 exhibition pages and previously exhibited (Seven Nations Challenge, 2016). The collection traces the development of mankind’s interaction with fish from pre-philatelic letters through to modern issues, structured around themes of subsistence, trade, technological progress, and conservation. A substantial and exhibitable study, containing: 34 proofs & essays (including original artist’s drawings, colour trials, die proofs, progressive plate proofs, etc.), ca. 500 stamps (mint & used, worldwide, with numerous better sets and varieties), 111 covers & postal history items (pre-stamp letters, scarce frankings, commercial usages, maritime and fishing-related cancellations, postal stationery), 32 pieces (illustrating scarce usages or cancellations),13 booklets. The material spans pre-philatelic entires to 21st-century issues, with coverage from all continents, and includes not only postage stamps but also one or two revenues and cinderellas relating to fisheries. The pages follow a carefully designed storyline: the earliest gathering of mussels on the shore, the development of nets and boats, the rise of the fishing industry and cod-liver oil production, technological change, regulation and marine research, and concluding with fish as both staple food and luxury product. The collection demonstrates an admirable mix of philatelic depth and thematic storytelling, with many items that would be competitive on their own in specialised sales, and a wealth of supporting material. The presence of so many proofs and essays ensures that this is more than a topical “gathering”: it is a thematic exhibit-quality holding suitable for expansion, re-exhibition, or breaking-down into valuable single lots. Additionally, a quantity of unsorted loose material comprising; 53 covers, 54 pieces and 4 proofs. A wonderful opportunity to acquire the backbone of a major thematic exhibit on one of the most popular natural history themes. Ex. Jørgen Jørgensen "FISHERIES".
