Smith was wounded at Sobraon, 10 Feb 1846 in the 1st Sikh War and later died of his wounds. This entire letter is largely a commentary on how tedious he found the 76 day journey from England to the Cape.

British Post Offices in China 1928/34: Great Britain 1924/26 2½ d. blue used on 1934 cover, with contents, addressed to "Major E.E. Tomlin, the Head Postmaster in Tientsin reporting on the state of the Field Post Offices in Tientsin and Shanghai; the parlous state of the F.P.O.'s is underscored by the fact that the British Tientsin Post Office was operating from a Junk on the Grand Canal and comments "Capt. Bouch and three of the staff have been withdrawn" - due to safety reasons. Together with the letter Tomlin has included a Greetings card, original photographs (6) including two showing "Tomlin's TPO" with a horse leading a cart on rail tracks, all sold with a further 1928 cover with GB 1½ d. chestnut also tied by "FIELD POST OFFICE / 1" cds.

Boer War 1901 (Feb 19): Cover from Barberton to Green Point Camp,
franked with Transvaal 1900 1 d. rose-red & green overprinted
'V.R.I.', addressed to the elusive "Mr A Gunning / Prisoner of War
/ Tent No. 14 (Transvaales) Greenpoint, Cape Town", censored on
departure with large double-lines violet oval "BURGHER CAMP /
BARBERTON" with "censored" and initials at centre, sent via
Pretoria (Feb 24) to Green Point Camp (March 1) where it was
censored on arrival, redirected north to Ladysmith Camp where it
was again censored and rectangular "PASSED / S.O.P. NATAL / CENSOR
/ P. of W." and triangular "PASSED / CENSOR P. OF W." applied, from
there sent to Diyatalawa Camp Ceylon where three separate censors
have applied their violet handstamp. One censor en route has
improvised some tape handstamping it "On H Majesty's Service"
(folded out for display). An extraordinary redirected cover,
showing eight censor marks on face, having travelled through four
camps. Remarkable and presumably unique

Struck on arrival with fine circular "INDIA SOLDIERS / 3 / LONDON" handstamp in black (Robertson In. Sol. 4) - rarely found so fine; this charge deleted and struck with "♚ / FREE" London datestamp (Dec 3) in red. Some docketing but a very fine and rare entire. Note: Agnes Sparling, writing from Poonamallee's Depot, addresses her enquiry to the Secretary of War at Horse Guards. Her husband was invalided home some four years previously from his Regiment and had promised to send money for his wife's support which was not forthcoming. Her father and brother had both recently died and no funds were now available and she asks the Secretary to deduct money from her husband's pension to support herself and two children.

1874 /99: 1 d. dull rose, six examples used on 1883 cover addressed to General H. Hope Crealock in London, all tied by "LOWER TUGELA / NATAL" circular datestamps (Aug 31) in black. Reverse with Stanger and Durban transit datestamps (Aug 31) and London arrival. Reverse of cover also shows "John Dunn" in manuscript - John Robert Dunn (1834 -1895) was a South African hunter and diplomat of British descent. Born in Port Alfred in 1834, he spent his childhood in Natal, orphaned as a teenager he lived in native dress on land near the Tugela River. He was a friend and confidante of the Zulu chief Cetshwayo. Dunn's 'Wikipedia' entry is entertaining and extraordinary - he fathered no less than 117 children! Note: General Henry Hope Crealock (1831-1891) had a glittering Military career from the Crimean War onwards. He commanded the 1st Division of the Army in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879.

1857 (March 7): Soldier's Letter from Sgt. Wood, of the 5th Fusiliers in Mauritius and sent to Trenton, New Jersey, USA; countersigned by Commanding Officer at left. Reverse with oval framed "PACKET LETTER / MAURITIUS" and handstamped "2" (pence) for the unpaid amount due in London (double the concessionary rate), sent onwards from London to Boston where struck with "BOSTON / BR. PACKET" cds (May 21) in black, Petterson cds (in error, with "Missent to" alongside) and thence to Trenton with charge mark of "9" cents due (2 d. unpaid = 4 cents + USA internal charge of 5 c. = 9 cents due). It is interesting to note that the "9" is an inverted "6" as there was no handstamp in Boston for this rate. Full contents with the lot - the Sergeant is looking forward to leaving the Army as the (Northumberland) 5th Fusiliers are departing for Hong Kong. Some ageing due to conditions and journey but a rare usage.

Wentworth Falls arrival cds (July 25) on reverse. File folds do not detract from an extremely rare cover. Note: The Campaign was against Chiefs Kgosi Luka Jantjie and Kgosi Galeshewe of the Batlhaping and Chief Toto Makgolokwe of the Batlharo. Chief Galeshwe who was eventually captured at Gamasiep on 30 July 1897.
