Great Britain. 1840 Two Pence Blue. The Only Known Two Pence Blue Bisect from the Shetlands. 1842 (28 March) entire letter from West Sandwick to Annsbrae, Lerwick bearing vertically bisected, left half lettered O[?], tied by black Maltese Cross, on receipt in Annsbrae, the cover was re-addressed to Cullivoe on Yell, with a further manuscript "1d." charge added - these both in the same, separate hand to the original sender. Two vertical folds well clear of the adhesive, otherwise fine and a remarkable rarity of exhibition calibre. B.P.A Certificate (1964), signed by Robson Lowe. (Estimate £20000 - £25000)

1841 (13 May) 1840 2d blue pl.1 GH on a pair of covers with left and right vertical bisects of the same stamp; both sent from Hull to Beverley, both stamps with clear to good margins and both cancelled by two strikes of a black Maltese Cross, the left portion with Hull MY 13 1841 double arc ds on reverse and the right portion with the same despatch of the following day. Only three covers recorded with accepted bisect usages. An outstanding and incomparable pair of exhibition showpieces. In 1936, a solicitor in Hull discovered three bisected 1840 Two Pence Blue stamps in his office correspondence. He tore them off the letters and they were later sold at auction in February 1937, the pieces bore Hull or Lincoln postmarks. A few years later, a solicitor in Beverley turned out some old papers and threw into the bin some old stamps on letters. A friend called round later the same day and reminded him that another solicitor had found some old stamps cut in half a few years earlier, so the letters were retrieved and one example was found, then a search among old files produced another. Expertise: Each with cert. RPS (1977), "H" with Karl Louis Provenance Certificate (2005) and signed Enzo Diena. Provenance: "G" ex "Chartwell" (2012), "H" ex D. M. Brown (1938)

Ironed file fold away from the adhesive but a rare and undocumented usage of the bisect in Kilburn.

1852 4b on Yellow, DIAGONAL BISECT used as 2b value, an outstanding example showing dividing lines on two normal sides of stamp, tied by lozenge grill to face of cover from Viterbo (17 OTT. 66 cds and official "Governo Ponteficio" cachet), another strike of cachet on reverse, sent to Grotte S. Stefano, a rare and important usage as originating postage (rather than to pay postage due), very fine showpiece; signed by G. Bottacchi (cert. 2000), Emilio Diena & A. Diena (cert. 1974); ex "Luxus"(Sass. 5A var., € 15'000+)

1868: King Michael 40 pa. ultramarine, Belgrade printing on pelure paper, a used example, bisected horizontally, upper half, used on 24 June 1867 entire letter from Paracin to Brood, Slavonia via Belgrade (Tasovac correspondence) at single internal rate tied by framed "NAPLACENO" handstamp in blue with oily despatch cds above and reverse with Belgrade transit cds (June 26). From Belgrade the cover would have been carried by courier to Ottoman controlled Brood. Some ageing and file fold well away from the adhesive but a great rarity - there are just two bisect covers from Serbia to a destination abroad recorded. Signed Kardosch, Friedl. Note: Illustrated in "Fürstentum Serbien" by Dr. V. Kardosch on page 146. Provenance: Collection 'Alexander' (John Volny), DF, Geneva, 12 Nov 1986, lot 90115.
