British Solomon Islands. 1907 Large Canoe Issue. The Large Canoe Issue was not authorized by the British High Commissioner for the Western Pacific, so to meet the need for postage stamps for the Solomons, Mr. Charles Woodford, the Resident Commissioner, personally had this issue printed in Sydney. To help prove his point and to show a profit, he advertised and sold complete sets to the public at 20/-. By realising a profit and showing the need for stamps, Mr. Woodford demonstrated that the Solomon Islands Post Office was profitable and necessary. The issue was sold from 14 February 1907 and during this initial period, the adhesives were considered "locals" and had franking abilities only to Sydney, Australia. Mail destined internationally required adding the correct New South Wales postage After 3 September 1907, the Large Canoe issue was accepted by the U.P.U. and approved as valid on international mail.. Note: Stamp type numbers quoted in this issue are those taken from "The Encyclopaedia of British Empire Stamps" Vol. IV Australasia by Robson Lowe. Covers. 1907 (10 Sep.) large size (c267x113mm.) on his britannic majesty's service envelope registered to France, bearing ½d. (2), 1d., 2½d., 5d. and 6d. all pen cancelled, showing straight-line "registered" h.s. and with, on reverse, "registered/sydney n.s.w." (25.9) and Paris (2.11) c.d.s. On arrival in Paris postes et telegraphs seal applied at right and in the centre due to damage in transit. Vertical paper fold at centre. A rare most unusual commercial cover. 1860–1981 Telegraph Stamps, Telegram Envelopes & Messages: An attractive and specialised collection, neatly mounted and knowledgeably written up across twenty-six (26) album pages, with a further ring binder containing over fifty additional pages. The collection begins with two distinct designs of unused and used stamps issued by the British and Irish Magnetic Telegraph Company, ranging in denominations from 3d to 5s and 1s to 5s (29 examples in total). Beyond the adhesives, the holding is enriched by a wonderful and diverse array of printed telegram forms, envelopes, and messages, spanning well over a century. Together, these items vividly illustrate the practical and historical development of telegraphic communication, while also providing strong crossover appeal between philately, postal history, and social history. This is an unusual and scarce assembly, seldom offered with such breadth and organisation, and one which offers enormous potential for study, research, and expansion by the specialist or collector of telegraph material
