Hong ...mehr 1844.02.12 (February 12) Folded Entire Letter from Canton via Hong Kong to England, letter content mentioned "The Government being about to despatch a steamer to Bombay on the night of the 14th from Hong Kong enable me to write a few lines ..." and other family matters; an indistinct HKPO Royal Arms mark on front with Bombay transit, oval India in red stamped at lower left corner, manuscript "1/-" rate marking, on reverse London transit in red and Chichester arrival in black, manuscript "pd 5a" indicating postage of 5 annas paid by a forwarding agent in Bombay, this route was shown in Lee Scamp's "Itineraries" as origination from Hong Kong by EIC Sesostris to Bombay (March 10), P&O Victoria to Suez (April 21) and P&O Liverpool to Southampton (May 10), endorsed "via Marseilles" at top, but indeed sent through the Southampton route, a hand-written memorandum of sale enclosed, a magnificent letter in the highest exhibition quality

Mostly legible strike in red with manuscript "3 Sept. 1847" date and "1 A" rate added on back of cover to Corfu, Ionian Islands, sender's directive "By Steamer, care of Backworth & Co., Malta", red framed "INDIA" and red framed "INDIA PAID" handstamps, Calcutta (Sept. 7) transit and Corfu (Oct. 10) arrival datestamps, various manuscript rate notations, cover with some soiling and toning, otherwise Fine, an exceptional destination, we presume this is the strike referenced in the Giles 1993 Supplement (which is spelled "Backergunge")

Long folded letter datelined "Highfield, Southampton, 3rd January 1824" and addressed to "H Clark Esqre, Civil Surgeon, Gorruckpoor, to the care of Messrs. Mackintosh, Calcutta", signed on top flap "Horatio Hardy, 5 Jany 1824" in his distinctive handwriting, Calcutta (May 4) arrival backstamp and ship rate receipt handstamp, manuscript "Recd 18th May 1824" receipt docketing, cover with somewhat heavy overall soiling, fragile interior folds with splitting, staining caused by strengthening along top fold FINE. A RARE COVER WITH THE SIGNATURE OF MAIL FORWARDER HORATIO HARDY, SENT FROM SOUTHAMPTON VIA LONDON AND CALCUTTA TO GORUCKPORE. LESS THAN A DOZEN EXAMPLES ARE THOUGHT TO EXIST. Horatio Hardy was the well-known proprietor of the Jerusalem Coffee House in Cornhill, London, one of the oldest newsrooms. It was frequented by merchants and sea captains, including many from the East India Company. All of the known covers signed by Hardy--an estimated 7 to 10--are addressed to India between 1823 and 1837
