Peacock, "China", bearing Gibraltar 25c blue adhesive (Spanish currency issue), cancelled by Gibraltar c.d.s. “GIBRALTAR / A / DE 14 / 93” and barred numeral “2”. Front shows boxed “T” handstamp indicating underpayment under UPU rules, with manuscript “1/–” (1 shilling due) and “6” (pence) in blue crayon – the latter representing the amount chargeable to the addressee. The short payment likely stemmed from use of the Spanish currency stamp rather than British-value postage. The destination “China” was later redirected to Singapore, likely following the fleet’s movement. Reverse bears three Hong Kong c.d.s. (JA 25 / 94) with index letters B, C, and D, reflecting multiple internal processing stages at the Hong Kong General Post Office—due to handling at various time slot of JAN 25 to look for appropriate steamer to ship the mail to Singapore. A scarce taxed naval cover with postal and maritime interest, combining currency discrepancy, UPU taxation, and rare multiple index strikes.

Hong ...mehr Hastings, United Kingdom to Singapore, Redirected to HMS Fly in Hong Kong, then Shanghai, China and eventually Nagasaki, Japan
29 January 1880, a cover sent from Hastings, U.K. to a Lieutenant in Singapore redirected to HMS Fly in Hong Kong, affixed 4x 1-penny in brown cancelled by “HASTINGS JA 29 80” where it is found the addressee in absence and returned to UK with manuscript “Returned” and a arrival c.d.s. “PORTSMOUTH AP 6 80”. (“PORTSMOUTH MY 10 80” back in U.K.
The cover was then redirected to the Lieutenant to HMS Fly, Hong Kong, via Portsmouth, Singapore, with departing c.d.s “PORTSMOUTH 10 MY 80”, Singapore c.d.s. (12 June), Hong Kong c.d.s. (20 June), where the mail was further forwarded to Shanghai via Japan P.O. with large double circled “SHANGHAI POSTAL AGENCY JUN 25”, which then further re-directed to the final destiny of Nagasaki, Japan with its c.d.s. “NAGASAKI IJPA JUN 29 –”.
The front side of the mail was cancelled by taxed marks of both “T” and 2-lined deficient payment instructions “VALUE OF STAMPS 4 / SUM TO BE COLLECTED 2”. Standard rate to the Far East from U.K. should be 6d (No concessionary rate be applied in sending to a lieutenant), plus another due charge of circled “DUE 8” – eventually charged 8 cents based on UPU rule, requiring to double the rate of postage to be collected 2d.
A truly excellent mail with plenty of characteristics and application of appropriate instructional markings. Upper left-hand corner is torn and a small part of the flap was lost.

Romanian Post, Treaty with Austria; 1869 (May 10): Mourning Envelope from Ismail to Syra, Greece, endorsed "via Constantinopoli", bearing 1869 Prince Carol 15 bani vermillion and 25 bani orange & blue, margins from shaved to large, tied by double-circle ornamental ISMAIL datestamp in blue (Kiriac fig. 401), straight-line JSMAIL and framed "P.D." in the same ink alongside, but also italic "P.P." of the Constantinopel office. Reverse with double-circle GALATI and Austrian CONSTANTINOPEL transit cds's as well as SYROS arrival cds (May 11, julian). An appealing and interesting item, the Romanian 40 bani franking paying the journey only to Constantinople but not to Greece, this was however neglected by the Greek post which charged the cover only with "20" lepta in blue crayon for the Greek inland journey, paid with 20 lepta blue. Underpaid mail was in principal not allowed by the regulations, a rare item full of postal history, illustrated in Edition d'Or volume 72 on page 133, cert. Heimbüchler (2016).
