LINCOLN EARLY EXPRESS LETTER TO CLAYPOOLE ENDORSED VIA A LANDLORD AT ...mehr
LINCOLN EARLY EXPRESS LETTER TO CLAYPOOLE ENDORSED VIA A LANDLORD AT THE ANGELL IN GRANTHAM: 26 April 1659 EL (minor stains to address-side - beer stains from the pub?!) is an urgent sealed decision of the Lincolnshire Sessions Court at Lincoln. Sent by that court at Lincoln (which was a few miles to the east of the Great North Road) via Newark to Grantham (these two towns were adjacent stages on that Road). The address shows how it was to be sent the 4 miles on from Grantham to the small nearby village of Claypole: - “To his very Lovinge friend Mr. Robert Parkinson at his house in Claypoole, be these with speed d[elivere]d. Nicholas the Tapster at the Angell in Grantham is desired to send this Letter according to the direction above-written by some safe messenger that will deliver it with speed.” It seems likely that the addressee would have paid for the local messenger, but the Court would have paid for the Carrier to take the letter from Lincoln as far as the Inn at Grantham. Contemporary legible copy included. Scarce. [Ex Cavendish. Sale 20/6/2012 Lot 1303 realised £280+BP] Cross Reference : EARLY LETTERS, EARLY LETTERS, EXPRESS MAIL (Estimate 240 GBP)
