1820 (June 26): Prepaid entire letter from Broomfield to Wilmington, USA via London and Philadelphia endorsed "via Liverpool" with Chelmsford mileage mark of despatch in blue, London tombstone "Paid" in red with "1/-" in red ink, details of the Liverpool agent erased in ink manuscript and struck with extremely rare curved "SHIP TELEGRAPH" in red with framed "H. COFFIN" handstamp of the Ship's Captain below. On arrival in Philadelphia struck with "6" in red (Aug 25) and Forwarding Agent's name (Othniel Alsop) and address deleted and the entire mailed on with circular "PHIL" datestamp in red to Wilmington, Delaware where charged a further "6" cents in manuscript. 1835 (December 11), Robert R. Hunter, Cowes, Forwarding Agent, stampless transatlantic folded letter, with contents datelined Cowes (Isle of Wight), addressed to Ebenezer Hale, endorsed with bold manuscript “20” rating, red circular New York Ship / 30 Jan arrival on front, reverse showing the scarce forwarding cachet “Received and Forwarded by Your Obedient Servant, Robert R. Hunter, Consul, U.S.A., Cowes” (Rowe RF 5), a rare consular-forwarded letter, fine and desirable. The enclosed letter, written by David Wood, reports the safe arrival of the ship Eliza after a stormy four-week Atlantic passage; he describes two severe gales, damage to sails and rigging, and the loss of a boat, yet notes that the vessel remained comparatively dry and seaworthy. He further observes “a large number of Western-bound vessels in these roads” and records that Eliza was ordered onward to Hamburg with a cargo of salt, illustrating the commercial links between American traders and European markets, with Cowes serving as an important staging port.

The contents include interesting remarks regarding mail contracts,
with the sender writing in favour of a route via New Orleans
instead of the route via Jamaica - "I know it to be the quickest
and the cheapest." Ultimately, however, in 1872 the RMSP contract
was renewed when a monthly service was entered into between Belize
and Jamaica
