1846.12.20 (December 20) Entire Letter from Shanghai to England (26.2.47) “via Marseilles”, showing “Too Late” double-line framed h.s. (Webb type AAi) with “Hong Kong” double-arc d.s. (29.12) and London c.d.s. (25.2.47) on reverse, rated “1/10” (¼ ounce letter rate via Marseille). Rare usage of the first “Too Late” h.s. from Treaty Port Shanghai during this instructional mark’s first year of usage, indicating that the letter was too late for the regular mail and the 6d. late fee had to be paid, the only known cover from Shanghai bearing the first Hong Kong late fee h.s.
The steamer “Lady Mary Wood” was late reaching Hong Kong, so the H.M.S. “Espiegle” was announced to depart Hong Kong on 29.12.46 with the mail. The regular mail was to close at 6 p.m. on the 28th, and a supplementary mail was accepted from 9 to 10 a.m. on the 29th. The 29.12.46 Hong Kong c.d.s. and the “Too Late” h.s. demonstrate that this letter was carried by the H.M.S. “Espiegle” (and is one of only two known covers carried from Hong Kong by that vessel).
In 1863, the first supplementary mail was charged a 12 cent (6d) late fee from 9 to 11 o’clock. The second supplementary mail was charged a 24 cent (12d) late fee from 11 AM to half-past 12 PM.
