1897: China 10 c. deep green (Gi. 101) used on combination cover to the Dowager Lady Porthesk in London tied by "CHEFOO" dollar chop in blue (June 10), with 1882/96 5 c. pale blue pair for onward tranmission tied by SHANGHAE cds code C datestamp (June 13) in black. Reverse with imprinted "HMS Powerful" on flap in black; SHANGHAI dollar chop in black, Hong Kong cds and London (July 18) arrival. A fine and most attractiive cover. Note: HMS Powerful was built expressly for work on the China Station. During a full-power run between Wei Hai Wai, China, and Yokohama, Japan, in late July 1898, her stokers mutinied, but she then visited Port Arthur without incident. Her guns and crew later assisted at the Siege of Ladysmith in the 2nd Boer War.

Rare and fine complete Newspaper with much information on the 2nd Opium War "From the 12th of the current month, the River and Port of Canton and their outlets will be held in a state of effective Blockade"; and market quotations for Opium and local correspondence intending to debunk the British Government's (true) view that over 100'000 Chinese died each year from Opium addiction; the final page with a vast list of Ships involved in both Trade with China and a long list of British and foreign Naval blockade vessels. A fascinating document and an unusual usage.
