IRISH OFFSHORE ISLANDS - RUTLAND ISLAND - RARE EARLY LETTER WITH ...mehr
IRISH OFFSHORE ISLANDS - RUTLAND ISLAND - RARE EARLY LETTER WITH "NARIN" REF. SHIPWRECK; Fine 10 Apr. 1787 EL (neatly fold to show internal dated heading alongside address-panel) from Captain Cadenhead recently wrecked on this remote west coast Donegal island on the American ship 'Success'; sent to Bristol (redirected locally) charged "4" then "1/$" with a very fine rare "NARIN" (only one other example recorded) on the front. This is the equal earliest known (and one of only two 18th century) cover recorded from this island; the other (with a badly damaged address panel) was sent by the same man on the same day to the same address. The ship was en route from Philadelphia to Killybegs (and then Dominica), and the Captain and crew were very fortunate that the local M.P., W.B. Conyngham, had set up an entirely new village on the island in 1784. The locals helped rescue the cargo and repair the ship! With full research notes about the voyage, the ship and the wreck. Cross Reference : CRASH/WRECK MAIL, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA (Estimate 300 GBP)

IRISH OFFSHORE ISLANDS - RATHLIN ISLAND - THE RARE "...BALLYCASTLE S.O." CDS IN PURPLE OR BLACK; 15 July 1907 & 17 July 1909[?] PPCs (v. fine or slightly dusted respectively) to Bangor/Ballymoney each with KEVII ½d; the first with the ½d tied by fair Ballycastle cds but having a v. fine "RATHLIN ISLAND/BALLYCASTLE S.O." cds struck nearby most exceptionally in purple, the other with the stamp cancelled by the same RATHLIN ISLAND..." cds but in black. Very few pre-1930 Rathlin Island covers or cards have been recorded. Fine pair. (2 cards) [Both ex Michael Goodman.] (Estimate 150 GBP)
DUBLIN - EXTREMELY EARLY MANUSCRIPT "Mifs[en]t to Dublin" COVER EX ...mehr
DUBLIN - EXTREMELY EARLY MANUSCRIPT "Mifs[en]t to Dublin" COVER EX "BRUGES TO NORFOLK"; Nov. 1766 EL [dated from research into writer & contents] from “BRUGES” (Type 12 hs recorded from 1764) to “Bodney, Norfolk Par Londres” (nr. Thetford) charged “10[d]” (Belgium to London), and then “In [all] 1N4” (10d + 6d to Dublin) in error! There are London “NO/29[?]” Foreign Branch & “5/DE” & “6/DE” Inland Bishop Marks on the reverse. The inexplicable error was spotted at once in Dublin and so it was endorsed “Mifst. to Dublin” on the front and returned for delivery in Norfolk. The rate changed to “In [all] 1N1” (10d from Belgium + 3d London to Thetford). The contents are from the famous English Prioress “[Mother] Mary Aug[ustina]. More” (1732-1807) of the Bruges Priory who became Prioress there in 1766; the letter talks about the recent reshuffle of the nun's duties when she was elected to the top job. This is the earliest town-specific Irish Missent mark that we have recorded; the only recorded earlier example - dated 1712 - just reads "Mifsent". Fine and fascinating Exhibition Item. Cross Reference : MISSENT MAIL, BELGIUM, NORFOLK (Estimate 150 GBP)

BRAZIL PACKET LETTER TO LONDON DIVERTED VIA DUBLIN DUE TO GROUNDING ...mehr
BRAZIL PACKET LETTER TO LONDON DIVERTED VIA DUBLIN DUE TO GROUNDING ON VALENTIA ISLAND; Fine 9 Jan. 1840 E from Rio to Huth in London "p Skylark Packet" charged the "2/9" 'up to ½ oz' rate; with a very fine British P.O. "RIO-JANEIRO" cds (filing fold) on the front; but there is also - most exceptionally - a 5 March red diamond-framed Dublin transit ds on the lower flap (with 7 Mar. London F.B. arrival backstamp). Research at the P.R.O. has tracked down the ship's log: after strong gales blew her off course, she was briefly grounded on Valentia Island in Co. Kerry. The Captain was C.P. Ladd, but it was later established that two of his officers, "J. Burton and T. Garland were drunk" at the time...! The 'Skylark' was refloated and was soon returned to the South America service where she continued as a P.O. Packet ship until she was totally wrecked in 1845. Rare early item connected with Valentia Island in the far west. Cross Reference : BRAZIL, CRASH/WRECK MAIL, MARITIME MAIL (Estimate 300 GBP)
