Endorsed “Via Australia” at lower left and manuscript “4” (cents) for the Hong Kong ship letter inwards fee. On the reverse is a shipping forwarders handstamp “CROSS & Co. / VALPARAISO” in blue with transit datestamps for Sydney and Hong Kong. Very fine and exceptionally rare. Route - Private sailing ship: Departed Valparaiso 23 July 1859 per “Lizzie Spaulding” to Sydney. Departed Sydney (4 Nov) per “Helios” to Hong Kong, arriving 18 Dec 1859. Note: The contents are remarkable and relate to the trade of flour between Chile and China. “The flour market, during the past year - which we expected from the good crop would have ruled low - has been irregular, and affected by the Revolution which disturbed the whole country from January to May. Some of the crop has been destroyed by military movements, and some are gathered and left in the interior so as not to be available for shipment, until the wet season passes, and the roads become good...” The 1859 Chilean Revolution was an armed rebellion by the Chilean Liberals against the conservative government of President Manuel Montt. The revolution took place from January 5 to May 21, 1859, and ended in failure, with 5,000 people killed. It was the second attempt by the Liberals to overthrow the government, following an unsuccessful attempt in 1851. The earliest recorded cover from Chile to the Australian Colonies and exceptional usage as a forwarded cover to Hong Kong. Provenance: Collection Blank, Forster

The cover is endorsed at upper left “Via San Francisco”, but scored through and replaced by “Brindisi”. Two strikes of the Valparaiso “REGISTERED” handstamp in black with the London registered datestamp on obverse (July 17) and Sydney arrival on the reverse. One of the 3 d. stamps was originally applied around the edge of the envelope, otherwise very fine. A delightful and extremely rare usage. Cert. BPA (1975). Route - Pacific Steam Navigation Co: Departed Valparaiso by steamer to Panama. Royal Mail Steam Packet Co: Departed Colon (19 June) per “Shannon” via Jamaica (25 June), Port au Prince (27 June), St. Thomas (29 June), “Martinique” (30 June) and Barbados (1 July) to Plymouth, arriving (16 July); by rail to London. P&O Line: Departed London 6 Aug 1875 by rail to Brindisi; “Baroda” (9 Aug) to Alexandria (12 Aug); “Bokhara” (13 Aug) via Suez Canal to Galle; “Nubia” (28 Aug) via King Georges Sound (11 Sept) and Adelaide (16 Sept) to Melbourne (18 Sept); “Ellora” (18 Sept) to Sydney, arriving 21 Sept 1875 (111 days). Note: The arrival datestamp on the reverse of the 11 September 1875 is incorrect, it should read 21 September. This cover is recorded as Cover No. 7 on Page 171 in “Great Britain: Mixed-franking covers illustrating postage stamp development”. It is the only cover recorded at this rate in the census. The sole British Post Offices Abroad cover recorded from Chile to the Australian Colonies. Provenance: Collection McGowan; Glassco

headed ...mehr Incoming Mail via Pacific Ocean 1859 (23 July): Entire letter headed Valparaiso, Chile mailed via New South Wales to Hong Kong, carried as a private consignees letter from Chile to Sydney where a New South Wales 1859 Diadem 6 d. fawn, imperforate with three large margins was affixed and tied by a “N.S.W.” in ovals handstamp in black, prepaying 6 d. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to Hong Kong. Provenance: Collection Blank, Forster

mourning ...mehr Incoming Mail Overland via Brindisi & Suez 1875: Registered mourning envelope from Valparaiso, Chile to Sydney, New South Wales bearing 1865 Great Britain 4 d. vermillion, pl. 14; 1867 2 s. dull blue and 1873 3 d. rose, pl. 12, two examples, (Gibbons Z63+Z64+Z86) all cancelled by the “C30” duplex of Valparaiso and prepaid 2 s. 10 d. comprising 2 s. 6 d. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter plus 4 d. registration to New South Wales.
