Nashville Tenn., 5c Violet Brown, Vertical Tête-Bêche Pair (61X5a). ...mehr
Nashville Tenn., 5c Violet Brown, Vertical Tête-Bêche Pair (61X5a). Block of twelve containing three vertical tête-bêche pairs and six normal stamps at top and bottom, consisting of two full stereotype groups of six units, both Positions 1-3/4-6, the work and turn printing method resulting in foot-to-foot tête-bêche pairs — Positions 4 over 6, 5 over 5 and 6 over 4 — part original gum, full margins to touched, deep shade, horizontal crease at center, some thin spots and creasing, repaired tears in corner and margins of stamps at top and bottom not affecting the three tête-bêche pairs VERY FINE APPEARANCE. ONLY TWO TÊTE-BÊCHE BLOCKS OF 12 OF THE NASHVILLE 5-CENT PROVISIONAL ARE RECORDED—both in the deep violet brown shade. A SPECTACULAR CONFEDERATE STATES RARITY AND THE LARGEST KNOWN MULTIPLE OF ANY NASHVILLE PROVISIONAL. Peter Powell's study of the 5c Nashville (“Plating the Nashville Provisional”, Confederate Philatelist, January-March 2008) sought to correct the long-held belief that the Nashville provisional stamps were printed from plates of ten. Powell concluded that stereotype groups of six units, three wide by two tall, were used to build up the Nashville printing plates. Based on plate flaws unique to specific positions, Powell also concluded that the plate size was no less than 18 subjects, made from at least three six-unit stereotype groups, and that more than one plate was made. The tête-bêche arrangement in printed sheets occurred when one impression was made, then the sheet was turned 180 degrees ("work and turn"), and a second impression was made. This block of twelve of the Nashville 5c Violet Brown, one of two recorded, contains two stereotype groups of six printed foot-to-foot, yielding three tête-bêche pairs. The legendary Caspary collection contained both of the recorded blocks of twelve (lots 313-314), but we do not know where Caspary acquired them. Both blocks have faults, which are immaterial in a philatelic item of this importance and rarity. For all of the Nashville shades and Scott numbers, we record eight tête-bêche multiples: 5c Carmine (61X2a): 61X2a-PR-COV-01: Vertical pair, Positions 5/5, tied by Sep. 9, 1861 datestamp on cover to Thomas B. Lynch, Charleston S.C., ex Ferrary, Emerson, Gallagher (Christie's, Mar. 25, 1987, lot 268), Haub ("Erivan") 61X2a-PR-COV-02: Vertical pair, Positions 4/6, tied by Sep. 15, 1861 datestamp on cover to Thomas B. Lynch, Charleston S.C., ex Dr. Graves, D.K. collection (Sale 1022, lot 1068) 5c Brick Red (61X3a): 61X3a-PR-UNC-01: Vertical pair with sheet margin, Positions 4/6, uncancelled, creases, small repair, ex Gallagher (Christie's, Mar. 25, 1987, lot 273) 5c Violet Brown (61X5a): 61X5a-BL-OG-01: Block of 12, Positions 1-2-3/4-5-6/6-5-4/3-2-1, original gum, faults, ex Caspary (lot 313), Lilly, Boker, Haub ("Erivan"), Middendorf (Sale 1225, lot 115) 61X5a-BL-OG-02: Block of 12, Positions 1-2-3/4-5-6/6-5-4/3-2-1 (different setting than block above), original gum, faults, ex Caspary (lot 314), Boker, Haub ("Erivan"), the block offered here 61X5a-PR-CAN-03: Vertical pair with sheet margin, Positions 4/6, Oct. 29 datestamp, repaired, ex Gallagher (Christie's, Mar. 25, 1987, lot 284), Sale 1182 (lot 256) 61X5a-PR-CAN-04: Vertical pair, Positions 4/6, pen cancel, ex Hind (as strip of 3), Hessel, Golden/Dukeshire, Cunliffe, Sale 1035 (lot 62) 61X5a-PR-CAN-05: Vertical pair, Positions 4/6, Sep. 25 datestamp, ex Ferrary (on cover to Lynch, Charleston, removed and margins trimmed), repaired, 1984 Rarities (Sale 632, lot 48), Boshwit (Sale 940, lot 355) Ex Caspary, Boker and Haub ("Erivan"). The Scott U.S. Specialized values a Violet Brown 61X5a tête-bêche pair at $5,000 unused and $7,500 used, but the reality is that the only unused tête-bêche multiples are a Brick Red 61X3a pair (the only recorded Brick Red tête-bêche) and the pairs contained in the two ex-Caspary blocks. Scott value $22,500 as three unused tête-bêche pairs and six unused singles.
