Transkei / Basutoland Campaign 1880: Cover fronts (2) and a cover, all addressed to Tonbridge, Kent and endorsed "On Active Service" with 1880 example bearing 1872 1 d. carmine (3) tied by "55" barred numeral obliterator in black, with "UMTATA" cds in black (Dec 3) and thence via Cape Town (Dec 9) - this counter-signed at left by commander of the K.W.T.V. (King William's Town Volunteer Artillery), "Umtata 2/12/80". "3 d." charge deleted by "B16" obliterator on Plymouth TPO and charged "1/3d.", to pay on arrival. Second example with notation of sender at left and cancelled at Umtata bearing single 1 d. carmine and thence via Cape Town; and third cover from Fort Hartley, Basutoland to Tonbridge, Kent with reverse showing QUTHING cds (Jan 19), oval framed Aliwal North (Jan 20) and Cape Town cds (Jan 24). The cover with possibility of stamp removed or fallen off in transit as treated initially as unpaid with "3d." applied, this deleted on the Travelling Post Office from Plymouth to Bristol by "B16" barred obliterator. Manuscript notation made by the addressee on arrival "Frank. Fort Hartley 17 Jan". Faults but a very unusual group.

1853 (Sept): 1 d. pale brick-red on deeply blued paper, a used example with ample to large margins all round, on 1856 Soldier's Concessionary rate cover to Sevenoaks, Kent tied by CGH obliterator in black. The cover mailed endorsed from "Private Thos. Bidgood of the 45th (Nottinghamshire) Regt." at Grahamstown, countersigned by R. Miller, Capt. Commanding Detachment"; carried on the bark "Wellington" arriving at Cape Town (Feb 8, 1856) from Madras, bound for London where it arrived (April 13) with red London 'Paid' cds. Reverse with oval framed GRAHAMSTOWN datestamp (Feb 5) in red,CAPE TOWN / CAPE OF GOOD HOPE cds (Feb 9) in red and Sevenoaks cds of arrival in blue. Central file fold well away from the fine adhesive; Soldier's Letters bearing the first issue 1 d. adhesive are rarities, this being a very fine example. Cert. BPA (1989). Note: In February 1856 the 45th Regiment's HQ was moved to Fort Beaufort and the detachments on the Buffalo River were relieved by troops of the 73rd Regiment; therefore it is likely that Pte. Bigwood was advising his correspondent of the move to Fort Beaufort. The letter could have only been carried by Private Ship as it was mailed during the period between April 1854 and September 1856 when the General Screw Shipping Co. abandoned their contract due to the Crimean War, with the Lindsay line contract starting on 9 September 1856. It is interesting to note that in the Joseph Hackmey collection (Edition D'Or XXII, published by Corinphila) there is a further Soldier's letter (illustrated on page 35) from this voyage of the "Wellington" - where the master of the ship, one W. Black, declined to charge his Captain's gratuity and the letter was, unusually, delivered without further charge. Provenance: Collection "Franschhoek", Spink, London, 20 June 2012, lot 66.

Hiscock, 2 Co. / 13th Light Infantry" (The Somerset Light Infantry - Prince Albert's), countersigned by Colonel Arthur Horse commanding Officer of the Regiment which campaigned at the Cape and surrounding territories from 1859-1863. Celt" with 'London / Paid' arrival cds (Feb 28) in red. Small imperfections but a rare and attractive cover. Signed Holcombe. Cert. Holcombe (1985). Provenance: Collection Dr. Guy Dillaway.

1844 (Oct 31): Entire letter from the Cape of Good Hope to Newark, Nottingham at Military concession rate, endorsed from "Corporal Henry Smith 53rd. Regt." and countersigned by his Commanding Officer at lower left, with handstruck "1" in red and London tombstone datestamp (Jan 9, 1845) and Newark arrival on reverse. Overall staining but scarce. Note: Corporal Henry Smith served in the 53rd Regiment, King's Shropshire Regiment. The regiment fought in the 1st and 2nd Sikh Wars. Smith was wounded at Sobraon, 10 Feb 1846 in the 1st Sikh War and later died of his wounds. This entire letter is largely a commentary on how tedious he found the 76 day journey from England to the Cape.
