"GENÈVE 6 OCT. 47 11½H" auf dreiseitigem, in englischer Sprache abgefasstem Faltbrief aus Privatkorrespondenz an Capitaine Duval in Lancy. Signiert von der Weid, Attest Marchand (2025). SBK=CHF 4'900. Anmerkung: Verfasser des Briefes ist der damals in Genf weilende Kaufmann Samuel Greg Rathbone (1823-1903) aus Liverpool, der mit seinem Bruder William und Partner James Worthington in den frühen 1840er Jahren in Canton (China) ein Handelshaus zur Ein- und Ausfuhr von brit. Textilien resp. chinesischem Tee und Seide gegründet hatte. Der Brief enthält vor allem Nachrichten über Duvals ebenfalls im China-Handel tätigen Sohn: "William tells me Mr. Duval is going to Macao where we have a summer house to give the members of the establishment a little sea air and escape for some weeks from the heat of Canton, and when there no doubt your son will have more time for writing. Mr. Worthington always speaks with great pleasure of his acquaintance with your son. Things seem to be settling down in Canton, and if our Govt. behave with ordinary justice and judgment [...] the difficulties would be at an end [...]. Trade was also expected to improve after three years horrible depression, and with it's progress I hope the fortunes of your son may be such as to lead him not to repent so long a journey"
