Crimean War 1856 (Dec 26): Letter and OHMS envelope from the War Department in Pall Mall to the nurse, Miss Emily Anderson stating "Dear Madam, His Imperial Majesty, the Sultan (of the Ottoman Empire), having been pleased to place at the disposal of Her Majesty's Government a sum of money for the benefit of the Ladies and Nurses who served in the British Hospitals on the Bosphorus and in the Crimea....offering to each Lady entitled to participate in this gift, a personal ornament commemorative of the service thus rendered by her to the sick and wounded ....engaged in the late war in the East..." with the cover showing manuscript "About the Sultan's present". Sold together with a further 'thank you' letter to Miss Emily Anderson written in 1859 from a Sergeant late of the Scots Fusilier Guards stating "present in the shape of a couple of chickens of my own rearing and sincerely hope you will do me the favour of accepting same as a token of my gratitude for the unrelenting kindness shown during my unwearied illness in Scutari Hospital, where your willing hand was ready to assist...". An extraordinary and unique group of great historical importance.
