Crimean War 1841: 1 d. red-brown on blued paper, imperforate, lettered PK/RK, a vertical strip of three with good margins on three sides and clear to touched at right, used on 1856 cover to Emsworth, Hampshire endorsed "Offrs. Letter, Crimea, via Marseille" at lower left, tied by London Inland Office "46" numeral obliterators in black. Reverse with "POST OFFICE / BRITISH ARMY" code B cds in green (April 19) and fine "Emsworth" arrival cds in green (May 1). Small imperfections but a very rare usage of the Imperforate issues on cover from the Crimea.

Crimean War 1854: 1 d. red-brown on blued, perf. 16, a horizontal strip of three lettered AH-AJ, used on 1854 cover from Ryde to a Lieutenant on HMS Queen at Sebastopol endorsed "via Marseilles", tied by "666" numeral obliterators in black. Ryde despatch cds in blue on reverse (June 4), London transit and notation of receipt "Received June 21st" in manuscript. A fine and attractive cover.

Crimean War 1854/55: 1 d. red-brown on blued, perf. 16, three examples used on 1855 mourning envelope to Captain Crealock, 90th Light Infantry, British Army, Crimea; all tied by London "14" numeral obliterators. Reverse with Charing Cross straight line in blue and London cds (Aug 27), thereafter readdressed (but deleted) to Scutari, this being the Turkish base and home to a major Hospital and convalescent home for British forces and then to Mullingar, Ireland.

Crimean War 1854/57: 1 d. red-brown on blued paper, perf. 14, an irregular block of three used on 1856 cover with full contents to London endorsed "via Marseilles", tied by "48" numeral obliterators in black of the Inland Office. Reverse with "POST OFFICE / BRITISH ARMY" code B cds in blue-green (Feb 23). One stamp with slightly rounded corner otherwise fine; contents state "I am living in a hut which does not keep out the wind quite so well as an English stable. Two years of war and a fair view and knowledge of its horrors is enough to make any man an advocate for peace".

Crimean War 1855: Covers (2), one with 1 d. red-brown, perf. 14, a horizontal strip of three used on 1855 cover to Captain Seegrave, Regt. of Foot, Staff British Barracks, Scutari; attempts to find the Captain failed with Regiments "6" and "12" in manuscript and "Commandant Abydos" deleted; cover returned to London (care of Coutts) and thence to Wolverhampton; back flap missing but unusual; sold together with September 1855 cover from Rostrevor via Newry bearing 1 d. red-brown, perf. 14, a horizontal strip of three addressed to the Reverend Crozier, Chaplain to H.M. Forces Balaclava.

Crimean War 1855: 1 d. red-brown, perf. 16, a horizontal strip of four lettered AC-AF, used on 1857 cover from Glasgow to Boulogne all tied by two strikes of "STRATHBLANE" Scots Local handstamps (Alcock Type III - rarity E) in black and by circular 'PD' in red. Glasgow and London cds's on reverse with beautiful coloured "UNITED / 1854" embossed motif showing Union Jack, Turkish Star & Crescent and the Tricolour flags - representing the three Allies in the Crimean conflict. The adhesives with imperfections but extremely rare - less than a handful (believed to be just four) Patriotic Crimea covers have been recorded.

Crimean War 1856 (Dec 26): Letter and OHMS envelope from the War Department in Pall Mall to the nurse, Miss Emily Anderson stating "Dear Madam, His Imperial Majesty, the Sultan (of the Ottoman Empire), having been pleased to place at the disposal of Her Majesty's Government a sum of money for the benefit of the Ladies and Nurses who served in the British Hospitals on the Bosphorus and in the Crimea....offering to each Lady entitled to participate in this gift, a personal ornament commemorative of the service thus rendered by her to the sick and wounded ....engaged in the late war in the East..." with the cover showing manuscript "About the Sultan's present". Sold together with a further 'thank you' letter to Miss Emily Anderson written in 1859 from a Sergeant late of the Scots Fusilier Guards stating "present in the shape of a couple of chickens of my own rearing and sincerely hope you will do me the favour of accepting same as a token of my gratitude for the unrelenting kindness shown during my unwearied illness in Scutari Hospital, where your willing hand was ready to assist...". An extraordinary and unique group of great historical importance.

Crimean War 1854: Cover sent unpaid from Exeter (Oct 28) to the Honourable Francis Colthorne, Aide de Camp, to Commander in Chief, Montreal, Canada; with italic framed "Returned for Postage" in red, transits of London and Liverpool (Oct 30). MONTREAL arrival cds and struck with both "7d." and "10d. Cy." handstamps in black. Readdressed to Sevastopol with manuscript "via England to the Crimea" with framed "COLONIES / & ART. 13" in red reverse with three French Military arrival datestamps "ARMÉE D'ORIENT / BAU. GAL." cds's (Dec 10-17). Due to the charges levied the cover marked "Refusé" on reverse and "Refused" on obverse in manuscript. Numerous manuscript charge notations, a most unusual cover.

Crimean War 1855: Covers (2) with rare usage from the Baltic Fleet with 1855 cover bearing 1854/57 1 d. red strip of three, perf. 14, tied by "DANZIG" circular datestamp in black and by London "46" Inland Office obliterators, but one stamp with fault; also an 1855 stampless cover to Chester endorsed "H.J. Dixon / 7th R.F." (Royal Fusiliers), struck with "POST OFFICE / BRITISH ARMY" cds (Feb 13) in blue with Chester arrival (March 3).

Crimean War 1857: Official cover addressed to Florence Nightingale at the Burlington Hotel, London, struck with oval "ON THE BUSINESS OF / GENERAL REGISTER OFFICE" in black and "♚ / PAID" datestamp (May 7) in red. Flap with General Register Office seal. Mailed from Dr. William Farr who collaborated with Florence Nightingale regarding medical statistics. A rare usage (see internet photo of album).

Crimean War 1854/55: 1 d, red on blued paper, perf. 16, a used example on 1855 cover to Manchester addressed to a member of the 3rd Light Dragoons, tied by "Exeter / 285" duplex, with London transit (July 24) and from Manchester, readdressed to Dublin (July 26). Again readdressed as the addressee's Regiment was the 6th Light Dragoons and endorsed at top "Embarked for the Crimea" and returned to London where struck with framed "Returned for "3" Postage" in red and the cover returned to sender. Plentiful backstamps on an unusual cover.
