1901/07: Lakatoi overprints specialised study mounted on six album pages, comprising a selection of twenty unused examples and a used block of four, illustrating the principal overprint types, paper varieties and positional flaws of the early Papua overprinted issues. The study includes a range of denominations from the ½ d. to 2 s. 6 d. values, showing the early “Papua” overprints, with examples printed on thin, medium and thick papers, together with both line and comb perforations. Several examples demonstrate differences in watermark orientation, paper thickness and impression quality, illustrating the production variations of the Port Moresby overprinting period. Included are several positional and overprint varieties, notably the SG21 positional flaw “Dot in first P of Papua” (position 8), recognised as the only constant overprint flaw recorded in the Large Papua overprint series and occurring only on the ½ d. value. Additional material illustrates overprint irregularities such as raised or distorted letters, double impressions and misplaced overprints, together with examples showing double printed overprints and “kiss” prints. The group includes two forgeries, 6 d. with a repainted overprint (SG26 Ceremuga certificate confirming alteration) and 2½ d. horizontal pair positions 19/20 thick paper not genuine despite BPA certificate of authenticity (SG35b), as well as a Stamp Duty overprinted strip of three illustrating positional dots after “Duty”, providing additional insight into the typographic setting of the overprints. A well-organised and instructive reference study of the early Papua overprinted Lakatoi issues, demonstrating the complexity of the overprinting process and the range of recognised constant and transient varieties. An attractive and specialised holding offering excellent scope for further research and expansion.

A carefully assembled and instructive reference group for the Large Papua Lakatoi issue, demonstrating the complexity of the early printings and the development of Vignette Stone IV. An attractive and specialised holding offering considerable scope for further plating and research of this classic Papua series Gi = £ 2'265+ premium for plate flaws.

The group demonstrates the progression from first printing transfers through later retouched states. Both upright and inverted watermark (3) orientations are represented, adding further technical depth to the study. The page forms an advanced examination of the lithographic process on the key high denomination, clearly illustrating the transfer characteristics from the original British New Guinea 2 s. 6 d. master plates to the Papua working stones. Condition generally fine to very fine unused with large part original gum. A rarely assembled and instructive plating group of this important high value Gi = £ 900+.
