POSTAL HISTORY: Post-WWII accumulation including a bundle of pre-1952 Australian stamps usages including 1946 from Abau with red/white R label and 'P.M.G.'S DEPT C.1/QLD-AUST' relief cds, 1950 from Kairuku with manuscript "R" 'label', and 'LOSUIA' cds in violet on Australia KGVI 2½d Envelope, then Pre-Decimal frankings including 1962 airmail to Iceland, 1965 to Switzerland with scarce franking of Birds 2/3d, Decimal-period range with advertising envelopes, official mail, meter cancels, etc, noted 1982 airmail to Taiwan, also 1959 inwards airmail from Tahiti redirected to Yule Island and 1962 Great Britain Registration Envelope airmail to Lae with 2/6d Castle, etc, condition a little variable but most are fine to very fine. POSTAL HISTORY: 1941-45 Australian Forces in New Guinea & Papua collection on leaves identified by location (many ex Ron Lee), mostly airmails to Australia many with KGVI frankings & a couple with Papua Pictorials, includes Honour & Comfort Funds envelopes, registered & official mail with a wide range of military censors & some civilian censorship also, noted 1945 Christmas card & illustrated envelope with PNG Map & Scene, also US Forces mail from Biak Island, Woodlarks, Goodenough Island, etc, NZ Forces on Bougainville 1946 unstamped envelope with 'R.N.Z.A.F./ D /N.Z.A.P.O.' Airforce cds, plus three leaflets in Pidgin English dropped over New Guinea announcing advances against Japanese troops, condition variable as usual, the postmark strikes generally above-average. 1901/71: Postal history collection of thirty-five covers and cards bearing Lakatoi issues ½ d. to 2 s. 6 d., including 2 d. bisect usage, pair of 1 s. on registered cover to USA (SG58), and 2 s. 6 d. single franking on registered cover to Dresden (SG82). The collection includes a range of airmail covers with first flight usages and autographed items, combination and mixed frankings, varied postal usages, and some philatelic correspondence including mail to stamp dealers, and 1907 OHMS Government Gazette wrapper franked ½ d. sent to Sydney. Also noted a 1930 airmail cover bearing both Air Mail Cooke and Harrison 3 d. printings in combination, 1935 Silver Jubilee 2 d. in combination with air mail 3 d. first flight Port Moresby/Yodda/IOMA, unused 1901/05 postal stationery cards (1 d. and 1½ d.) and additionally an original 1895 printed map of Papua New Guinea showing British and German possessions. Condition mixed as to be expected for postal history material, though many items fine. A colourful and interesting assembly offering considerable scope for further study and expansion.

1930 (15 Sept): Lakatoi “AIR MAIL” carmine overprint on 6 d. dull and pale purple, Harrison printing extensive specialised study mounted on six album pages, comprising 48 stamps including 47 unused and one used example, illustrating plate positions, constant varieties and shade differences of the overprint. The study includes six multiples, comprising three imprint blocks of six and two imprint strips of three, together with additional blocks of four and singles arranged by identified plate positions, providing a useful reconstruction of portions of the setting. The material illustrates several recognised varieties and positional features, including the position 27 variety “POSTACE” for “POSTAGE”, together with additional plate flaws, retouches, misplaced or distorted overprint impressions, position 16 "Double Perf" in left margin. Also included are comparative examples of the Harrison printing on different papers, and positional pieces demonstrating the relationship between the overprint and the underlying Lakatoi design. Fresh colour and majority large part og. A carefully assembled and highly instructive reference study.

1930 (15 Sept): “AIR MAIL” carmine overprints on Lakatoi issues, comprising 6 d. dull and pale purple (SG116) and 1 s. sepia and olive (SG117), Harrison printing. A specialised study page including two lower marginal imprint blocks of six showing “T.S. Harrison, Australian Note and Stamp Printer”, each with the overprint in differing shades, the 1 s. with the early deep carmine shade and the 6 d. in the normal carmine. Both blocks include position 39 “Tail flaw”, clearly visible in the right-hand stamp of the second row. Fresh colour and good centring throughout, the imprint margins clear and well preserved, large part og. A rare and visually impressive pair of multiples illustrating this distinctive constant variety; imprint blocks particularly desirable and seldom encountered in conjunction with the position 39 flaw.

Group of three items showing position 39 “Tail flaw”, comprising used lower marginal imprint blocks of six with “T.S. Harrison, Australian Note and Stamp Printer” and a block of four, together with an additional unused single example. Fresh colour and clear impressions throughout, the imprint margins well preserved; the unused example with large part og., lightly mounted. Minor tone spotting to the imprint block otherwise very fine. A scarce group illustrating this distinctive constant variety, used examples of the position 39 flaw being particularly difficult to obtain. Unpriced.

1930 (15 Sept): Lakatoi “AIR MAIL” carmine overprint on 1 s. sepia and olive, Harrison and Ash printings, specialised plate positional colour overprint variety study, set-out on six album pages, comprising 34 unused examples of which there are four blocks of 4, two imprint blocks of 6, an imprint strip of 3 and a corner marginal pair. Includes the "Cherry red" shade on a corner marginal block of four (much scarcer than the deep carmine). All of fresh colour, large part og., the odd imperfection, although clear impressions throughout, the imprint margins well preserved. A scarce and specialised group illustrating the plate positions and overprint shades.

1930 (15 Sept): Lakatoi “AIR MAIL” carmine overprint on 1 s. sepia and olive Harrison and Ash printings, specialised positional study comprising three lower marginal imprint strip of three, each showing position 39 which attracted the “Tail flaw" to overprint before re-touching. The group comprises a T.S. Harrison imprint strip of three, with deep carmine overprint showing clearly the "Tail Flaw" and another Harrison and Ash imprints with position 39 re-touched, providing a useful comparative reference for the overprint variety. Fresh colour and clear impressions throughout, the imprint margins well preserved with large part og. slight browning as is common, an attractive and informative positional study of this recognised air mail overprint flaw. A scarce and specialised group illustrating the position 39 across the different printings. 1930 (15 Sept): “AIR MAIL” deep carmine-lake overprint on 1 s. sepia and olive Lakatoi, Harrison printing. An exceptional specialised study page comprising imprint block of six from the lower margin showing “T.S. Harrison, Australian Note and Stamp Printer”, the scarce early deep carmine-lake overprint, this shade being confined to the small first portion of the printing. The block includes position 39 “Tail flaw” and position 11 “A.I.R.” flaw, together with three additional singles: a further example of position 11, one on the scarcer white paper and one used example. A rare and visually impressive group, the deep carmine shade being unpriced. The imprint block particularly desirable and seldom encountered. Cert. Ceremuga (2012).

1930 (15 Sept): Lakatoi “AIR MAIL” carmine overprint on 3 d. turquoise, Ash printing, extensive specialised study of almost exclusively unused material, mounted on eleven album pages, including a complete pane of forty, together with imprint block of fifteen, four imprint strips of three (one used) and four blocks of four, in addition to singles arranged by identified plate positions. The study illustrates different printings and positional characteristics, with numerous pieces retained in marginal positions showing the JOHN ASH imprint, allowing reconstruction of portions of the sheet. Several constant varieties and plate characteristics are represented, including examples of the “Rift” flaws, as well as misplaced and irregular overprint impressions. The pane and multiples provide a particularly useful reference for the setting of the overprint across the sheet. Additionally included is one page of SG113 with black “AIR MAIL” overprint, together with four further pages of related Lakatoi material, including Cooke printings and shades (SG98) and SG85/92 showing plate flaws, forming a useful comparative reference group for the issue. A carefully assembled and highly instructive specialised study in mainly fresh and fine condition, with large part og.

Hundreds housed in two Scott specialty albums plus two three ring binders, a very high degree of completion with additional varieties and multiples, included are 1901, British New Guinea set to the 2s6p mint (1-8), 1907, Papua overprint set to the 2s6p mint (11-18) with additional examples, 1p carmine complete sheet of 30 plus additional perf, plate or watermark varieties, 1907-1908, set to the 1s (28-33) with sheets of the 2d, 2½d and 6d, 4d top corner single with double perf at top, 1916-1931 set to the 10s (60-73), 1932 Pictorial set to the £1 mint (94-109), a very significant number of airmail and Official issues both perfin and overprint types and much much more, must be inspected carefully to be full appreciated, an excellent holding with many better sets and singles.
