ARGANA, MOROCCO. On MAY 2 1939 the Air France Dewoitine 338 “Ville de Dakar” en route from Dakar, Senegal – France, crashed at Argana, Morocco. The 192nd flight of the tri-engined plane, with a crew of six and six passengers, left Dakar for Casablanca at 6 a.m. Shortly after 3:30 p.m. a message was sent. It spoke about storm clouds and heavy cold. The plane was discovered 160 kilometers southwest of Marrakech where it crashed against a mountain and started to burn. A single line AVION ACCIDENTE cachet was applied to the back of the recovered mail

1954 SHANNON, IRELAND. On September 5th, the KLM Lockheed Constellation took off from Shannon Airport. One or two minutes after takeoff the tail of the plane touched the water and it crashed in the mud. Twenty five persons, including the pilot and two other crew members were killed. A cover from France to Israel with a 50Fr cancelled Lyon Grolee 25-7-1955 that was shot down by the Bulgarian Air Force killing all on board after the plane accidently strayed into Bulgarian airspace. Recovered mail received a three line violet boxed cachet in Hebrew translated ‘This cover was recovered from an El Al airplane that was shot down over Bulgaria 27.7.1955. 1946 AMSTERDAM. On November 14 1946 the KLM Douglas DC 3 was scheduled to land at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam at 6:50 a.m. while experiencing adverse weather conditions and poor visibility. After several landing attempts, the plane hit the runway at a high speed, crashed and was destroyed. The five crew members and 21 passengers perished in the crash. Recovered mail received an explanatory label written in Dutch. This is the cover illustrated by Sanford. Uncommon. (Sanford 461114)

1939 BRITISH AIRWAYS AT VORDINGBORG, DENMARK. On 15 August 1939 a British Airways Lockheed Electra was on the London – Amsterdam – Copenhagen – Malmo – Stockholm flight when approaching Copenhagen a fire broke out. The pilot landed the plane in the sea near Storstroem Bridge. He managed to escape but the passengers all died. The badly damaged and water soaked mail was recovered the following day and eventually forwarded. This cover from London (14 AUG) to Copenhagen has had the stamp washed off. It was forwarded without any explanatory markings

1943 LISBON, PORTUGAL. On February 22nd, the Pan American Airlines Boeing 314A “Yankee Clipper” on a flight from Bermuda to Lisbon was coming in to land when the left wing tip skimmed along the surface of the water, dug in and the plane crashed into the river. It remained partially submerged for approximately 10 minutes, then disappeared below the surface. There were 24 fatalities. This censored cover from Argentina to Sweden has the Swedish printed explanatory label on the back, and an arrival cancel of 8.3.43 (Sanford 430222c)

1870 SCILLY ISLANDS. 1870 Ballon Monte letter to St. Seine, Cote d’Or, that was on board the ill fated flight ‘34’ Jacquard that departed Paris on November 28 1870. The Jacquard was blown off course and crashed into the sea off the Scilly Islands, west of Cornwall. Several of the mail bags were recovered and the mail forwarded. This letter, which has had the stamp washed off in the incident arrived at its destination, St. Seine, on December 27th, over a month after it was posted. 1939 LUXEUIL, FRANCE. On August 11th, the Imperial Airways Lockheed Electra, that was being leased from British Airways, was enroute from London to Zurich with a stop in Basel. One of the engines had been giving trouble and at 3,000 feet the carburetor caught fire. The Captain put the aircraft down in a field near Saint Sauveur but undercarriage broke. The aircraft did not turn over. Captain Prowse and First Officer Whincop, slightly burned by the flames near the cockpit, jumped out and opened the cabin door to let the nine passengers escape. The aircraft was burned out. This charred cover, with a Swiss ambulance cover has an explanatory label typed in German and French, with a BASEL 15.VII.39 datestamp

1929 PARIS, FRANCE. The aircraft left Paris-Le Bourget Airport at 17:52 on an exploration flight to French Indo-China. Eight minutes after takeoff, while cruising over Paris at a height of 500 meters, the engine stopped. According to the crew, a fuel line ruptured shortly after takeoff, causing the engine to fail. The crew attempted to make an emergency landing but visibility was poor due to the night. The pilot tried to find a suitable open terrain for an emergency landing and eventually landed alongside the railway line near Bondy railway station, Bondy, Seine-Saint-Denis, a suburb of Paris. On landing, the aircraft lost its undercarriage and hit an electric pole, losing both its left wings. While the aircraft was destroyed, all three occupants were unhurt. The mail was recovered and returned to senders with a large violet cachet

POSTAL INCIDENT. 1953 cover to England with a 6d cancelled F.P.O. 963 NO 11 53 that, on the back, has a violet boxed ‘MISLAID MAIL / DELAY REGRETTED’ cachet and a label stating ‘It is regretted that this letter has been delayed abroad.’ A Home Postal Depot R. E. 17 NO 53 cancel is on the label. This boxed cachet was unknown until this letter turned up. A most interesting and very scarce item

1932 CROTONE, ITALY. The Air Orient Lioré Olivier 242 flying boat left Saigon on March 18 but was delayed between Corfu and Naples by bad weather. As a security measure, the pilot landed at Crotone, Calabria, Italy. During the storm, the seaplane broke its moorings and was stranded on the beach. The mail was soaked. A single line black ‘COURIER ACCIDENT’ cachet was applied to this cover.\The stamps were washed off and the cover was resealed at the back with Postes et Telegraphes official tape. Marseille 29.3.32 transit datestamps are on the back where this cover was resealed, (Sanford 320328)

1929 CAPE SALOU, TARRAGONA, SPAIN. On September 12th, while en route from Casablanca, Morocco, to Toulouse, France, the Compagnie Générale Aéropostale Latécoère 25-3.R aircraft crashed into the sea at Cape Salou, close to Tortosa, near Tarragona. The occupants were rescued by Spanish ships and the mail was recovered the following day. A two line cachet ‘ACCIDENT D’AVION / EN MER’ was applied to recovered mail. This cover from Casablanca to France has an Aube 15-9-29 arrival datestamp on the back. One stamp was washed off while in the water. An uncommon crash cover from Morocco

1948 (21.12.) Flugzeugabsturz in Calmote, Griechland durch Abschuss. Nierinck: 481221. Eine Douglas DC 3 der C.S.A. auf dem Flug von Prag nach Lydda wurde in den griechischen Bergen durch Aufrührer in den Taigetos Bergen abgeschlossen. Alle Flugzeuginnsassen waren tod. Es wurde wenig Post gefunden. In Nierinck ohne Preisangabe. Der Brief war unrsprünglich aus Budapest. Umschlag war sehr stark beschädigt, es sind nur noch der Inhalt und ein Vermerkzettel der ungarischen Post erhalten geblieben. Crash Mail.
