1957 cover to Southampton cancelled EASTBOURNE 22 DEC 1957. A label was affixed saying the cover has been accidentally delayed and tied by a Southampton 8 MR 58 datestamp. A delay of 76 days. A verbal enquiry produced the explanation that ‘A bundle or two of letters were found in an old mail sack that “must have been thrown to one side”, believed empty, during the Christmas rush’. Scarce and interesting

S S JEBBA. The steam ship ‘Jebba’, a vessel of three thousand eight hundred and thirteen tons, belonging to the African Steam Ship Company, whilst on her homeward voyage from west Africa, ran ashore on Bolt Tail, a few miles west of Salcombe, Devon , in fog on 18th March. Although the vessel was a total loss, all the passengers and mail were taken off safely. All the mail received a two line hand stamp in violet saying ‘SALVED FROM / S S JEBBA.’ There were a number of different hand stamps that were applied to the mail, the main difference being in the spacing of the letters. This registered cover from Sierra Leone has the Hoggarth & Gwynn Type 3 cachet

WINDSOR CASTLE 1876. The 1732 ton mail steamer Windsor Castle of the Currie Line sailed from London on 20th September 1876. At 2 a.m. on the morning of 19th October she was wrecked on Dassen Island, about 50 miles north of Cape Town. Passengers and the mail were picked up by the steamer Florence and were landed at Cape Town the following day. This cover, that has the original letter with it, arrived in Grahamstown on OC 25. Donald Currie established the Union Castle Line which came into service when the Currie Line and the Union Steamship Co were merged in 1876. So this would have been the first Union Castle Line wreck. A very rare cover from this wreck, which is not mentioned in Hoggarth & Gwynn

E. 17 NO 53 cancel is on the label. This boxed cachet was unknown until this letter turned up. A most interesting and very scarce item

1942 S S EMPIRE KINGFISHER. On January 18 1942 the S S Empire Kingfisher, a 6082 ton Ministry of War Transport ship is believed to have struck a submerged object at 3 p.m. off Cape Sable Island, Nova Scotia. She sank on the morning of the 19th January. This cover from Philadelphia (JAN 12) to England, censored and redirected on arrival, has a straight line ‘SALVAGED FROM SEA’ h/s and a label stating ‘POSTAL CENSORSHIP / The British Censorship is / not responsible for the absence of / Stamps from the cover of this / Postal Packet’ A London 11 MAR 1942 arrival cancel is on the back, so the letter must have been held for a considerable time after being recovered. This is the first time I have seen a label like this attached to any shipwreck cover. An interesting and rare item
