5c Red Brown, Dot in "S" (1 var). Vertical pair from 9th vertical row, both stamps with Dot in "S" variety, large margins all around, intermediate impression, tied by red square grid cancels, matching "New-York Aug. 16" (1848) circular datestamp on blue folded letter datelined August 15, 1848, written by Jacob de Cordova to the county clerk at Montgomery Tex., accompanying certificate notes a horizontal crease in top margin of top stamp, but this is so slight and negligible, it does not merit mention in our opinionEXTREMELY FINE. VERY RARE USE OF THE 1847 ISSUE TO PAY POSTAGE FROM THE EAST TO TEXAS—THE LETTER WAS WRITTEN BY A PROMINENT FIGURE IN TEXAS HISTORY.The USPCS census lists 18 confirmed 1847 Issue covers addressed to Texas post offices, including 10 with 5c stamps and 8 with 10c stamps. 5 of the 5c covers and all 8 of the 10c covers originated in eastern post offices or New Orleans—the remaining 5 covers (with 5c stamps) originated in Texas. This folded letter from New York City is prepaid for the 10c over-300 miles rate. The letter writer, Jacob Raphael de Cordova, was born in Jamaica, on June 6, 1808. De Cordova settled in Texas in 1839 and lived in Galveston and later Houston, where he was elected a state representative to the Second Texas Legislature in 1847. Through scrip and direct purchases De Cordova acquired large amounts of land to sell to settlers—at one point he had 1,000,000 acres in scrip or title. To attract settlers to Texas, he made speeches about Texas in New York, Philadelphia and other cities, and to the cotton-spinners association in Manchester. His widely read lectures were published on both sides of the Atlantic. His land agency, which he owned with his half-brother Phineas, became one of the largest such agencies in the Southwest. De Cordova and Robert Creuzbaur compiled the Map of the State of Texas, first published in 1849, which was the basis for much subsequent Texas cartography (source: Wikipedia).USPCS census no. 6188. Ex King. With 2012 P.F. certificate
