India, Used in Burma, 1854, 1a Deep Red, Die I (4a; SG 11). Nine singles affixed at top and overlapping at places, each cut close with design touched, cancelled or tied by diamond of dots on cover to Kingsbridge, England, sender's directive "via Calcutta & Southampton" , rare Tongnoo Post Office 1855 double-circle datestamp on back, boxed "INDIA PAID" handstamp, Calcutta and London transit and Kingsbridge arrival datestamps, receipt docketing also ties stamps, stamps with some faults FINE. AN IMPRESSIVE FRANKING WITH NINE SINGLE ONE-ANNA DIE I LITHOGRAPH STAMPS ON COVER FROM BURMA TO ENGLAND. ONE OF THE LARGEST ONE-ANNA FRANKINGS RECORDED AND ESPECIALLY RARE WITH THE TONGNOO DATESTAMP. We know of only one other cover with nine 1a stamps (made up of pairs and strips) and one larger franking with ten 1a stamps. Both of those covers were posted at Rangoon, a more common origin. Horizontal pair showing wide setting and separating line, full margins on each side, tied by diamond of dots cancels on blue folded cover from Akyab, Burma, to Wormerveer, Netherlands, sender's oval handstamp and directive "pr Overland Mail via Triest" , red Calcutta Jan. 8, 1855 datestamp on flap, "Wattenbach, Heilgers & Co., Calcutta" forwarder's handstamp (Rowe Rarity 3), red "INDIA PAID" handstamp, Wormerveer arrival backstamp, manuscript due rates, pair has a negligible slight bend or crease VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL WIDE-SETTING PAIR OF THE 4-ANNAS LITHOGRAPH FROM THE SECOND PRINTING ON A COVER FROM BURMA TO HOLLAND. This cover was likely sent privately via forwarder to Calcutta and then sent via Triest to Holland, prepaid 8a for the ship letter rate up to ½ oz. Four-margin pairs on cover are quite difficult to find, especially to a scarce destination. The pair of SG 19 catalogues £4,750 off cover. Ex Heddergott and "Magnolia". With 1976 R.P.S. certificate

1943 a pair of WWI Government of Burma OHMS airmail covers from Major JGW Evans to his brother in England, f.w. KGVI issues. With “by fast airmail” annotation. Major Evans was part of the Burma Frontier Force in China. He was killed when leading his patrol of Lahu Levies which was the smallest operating unit in Burma and fought from December 1942 until Major Evans death on April 8th 1943 at Mong Pawk.

This camp, on the Irrawaddy River 180 miles north of Rangoon opened in January 1916. Mail from there is uncommon. This cover arrived in Turkey on 29 January 1919

Third Burmese War 1887: India ½ a. green postal stationery envelope to Romsey, Hampshire endorsed "Burma Field Force, No Stamps but these available", counter-signed by sender at lower left with "A.C. (Acting Commander), Pin, U.B." (Upper Burma), cancelled by fine strike of "PAGAN" cds of despatch (March 14) in black. The envelope initially taxed with circular "T" marking but deleted by use of barred handstamp in black. Accepted as fully paid and struck with Bombay cds on reverse (March 23) and Romsey Station cds of arrival. Rare. Note: Pagan (Bagan), a World Heritage site, is 115 miles South West of Mandalay.

1857/59: 1 s. dull violett imperforate, wmk Large Star, a fine example with good to large margins, tied by light barred oval to 1860 cover to London, endorsed "via Marseilles", backstamped "COLOMBO / POST PAID" in red (June 26), "LONDON PAID" arrival datestamp on front (Aug 6). Upon arrival the receiver's address crossed out, the cover re-directed to Leamington, Warwickshire with the complete new address noted on the reverse of the cover, franked with 1 d. red-brown lettered QG, tied by oval "LONDON - W28" duplex datestamp with thimble LEAMINGTON arrival (Aug 7) cds in blue alongside. The cover cut along the edge to make the complete obverse and reverse visible for presentation reasons, stabilized from the back. No beauty but a cover full of postal history with a combination of the 1/- rate from Ceylon via Marseilles and a British inland franking.

Horizontal file fold well away from the franking, a desirable presentation of the 1/- rate via Marseilles.

Bearing a scarce red Russian military/naval cachet with boxed “Д.Ц.” (Dalny Censor / Far Eastern censor) and Imperial eagle seal, tied in transit. Attractive combination of Ceylon colonial view and Russo-Japanese War naval postal history.

Reverse with London cds of transit (Jan 20, 1858) in red and Forres arrival cds (Jan 22) in blue where charged "1/-" to pay. Rare. Note: "Too Late for the / STEAMER of....." italic handstamp was produced to insert the date rather than the name of the steamer.

Reverse, transit cds “GALLE JU 8 PAID”, “BOMBAY JUN 9” and arrival “DEL LIMLA JUN 13”. One short perf top. Attractive single franking. Scarce transitional rate. Mail to India in this period is not common. Comes with two additional covers, both sent from Colombo, one franked at the same 24c rate (FE 6 78) to Launceston, Cornwall, England via Marseille. Flap missing and edge faults. The other franked at the 48c rate (JA 18 77) sent to London. Scarce Transitional Rate covers with comparable at the previous rate.
